Systems Development Manager (SysDM)
The Amazon Dedicated Cloud (ADC) Region Reliability team seeks a talented, detail‑oriented Systems Development Manager (SysDM) to support AWS activities in US ADC regions for the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community.
A SysDM will tackle service‑centric technical and business problems, devise strategy, and facilitate technology solutions that may not yet be defined. They will deliver independently, with limited guidance, across cross‑functional initiatives. The role also necessitates understanding security risks due to technical complexity, and balancing short‑term versus long‑term needs.
From day one, SysDMs own a distributed team of engineers responsible for the operational health of secure, air‑gapped cloud services. They own the team’s roadmap: hiring, talent development, automation strategy, and ensuring availability and performance targets are met.
Day‑to‑day responsibilities include triaging and resolving service issues, driving root‑cause analysis, building dashboards and metrics, and partnering with service teams and program managers on new region builds and feature launches. The role requires coaching engineers, removing blockers, shaping career paths, and fostering a culture of ownership and continuous improvement.
Candidate must possess an active TS/SCI security clearance (with polygraph or commensurate clearance) and maintain it throughout employment.
Key Responsibilities- Lead, hire, develop, and retain a team of engineers supporting secure, air‑gapped ADC regions.
- Own the team's operational roadmap and work backwards from customer problems to set priorities.
- Drive operational excellence through automation, metrics, and process improvements.
- Triage and resolve service issues, lead root‑cause analysis, and implement preventative fixes.
- Partner with service teams, program managers, and cross‑functional stakeholders to support new region builds, feature launches, and service parity.
- Identify and manage technical and operational risks, communicating trade‑offs and mitigation strategies.
- Track and report team progress using metrics capturing customer impact, SLA compliance, and system health.
A typical day involves working with Region Reliability Engineers in the SCIF to assign and unblock workflows, collaborating with partner teams on automation to reduce manual tasks, conducting root‑cause analysis for complex issues, ensuring team SLAs are met, and mentoring the team while driving strategic initiatives for operational efficiencies.
Basic Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree or CSSLP (Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional).
- 5+ years of relevant systems engineering, software development, or infrastructure engineering experience.
- 3+ years of experience managing engineering teams, including hiring and talent development.
- Experience operating in a 24x7 production environment supporting mission‑critical services.
- Experience with Linux/Unix systems administration, networking, and infrastructure automation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Current, active US Government security clearance of Top Secret with SCI eligibility or above.
- Experience managing teams supporting cloud computing services at scale.
- Experience with support procedures and methodologies for production environments (ticketing, monitoring, metrics, SLA management).
- Experience improving systems through architecture, design patterns, reliability, and operational scaling.
- Strong analytical skills using data and metrics to drive decisions and measure impact.
- Experience working across organizational boundaries to deliver results.
- Experience with Agile engineering practices (Kanban, Scrum, continuous delivery).
- Familiarity with at least one modern programming or scripting language (Python, Java, Go, or similar).
