Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer​/Chief Science and Technology Advisor

Duties

The Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer/Chief Science and Technology Advisor leads AI and science policy at the Department of Justice, coordinating enterprise AI governance, promoting responsible innovation, managing AI risk, ensuring compliance, and serving as senior advisor to the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General.

• Serve as senior executive authority for AI and science policy integration
• Provide executive direction to enable responsible AI innovation
• Lead enterprise‑level AI risk management and oversight
• Act as DOJ's senior science and technology executive

• U.S. Citizen or National
• Veterans' preference not applicable to SES
• Selective Service registration for male applicants born on or after December 31, 1959, or an approved exemption
• Completion of pre‑employment security investigation and background check
• Drug screening with favorable results
• One‑year probationary period may apply
• Public financial disclosure (OGE 278) upon entry and annually thereafter
• Meet minimum qualifications and provide evidence of progressively responsible leadership experience

Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) demonstrated on a RESUME‑ONLY application (max 2 pages). All five ECQs must be addressed:

• Driving efficiency in resources and budget
• Merit and competence in producing high‑quality work
• Leading people and fostering a high‑performance culture
• Achieving results and aligning them with organizational goals

Mandatory Technical Qualifications (MTQs):

• Executive‑level expertise in AI governance, evaluation, and enterprise implementation, with deep knowledge of AI lifecycle, model evaluation, risk mitigation, explainability, bias assessment, and human‑in‑the‑loop processes.
• Experience leading enterprise‑wide technology and innovation initiatives in investigative, legal, regulatory, national security, or prosecutorial environments.
• Track record of leading multidisciplinary teams, promoting responsible technology adoption, and driving enterprise‑wide initiatives.

Advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.) in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field is highly desired.
