Principal, Data Scientist

Position Summary

A principal data scientist will lead the technical architecture of data science solutions to achieve outstanding business outcomes for Walmart Marketplace.

• Work closely with a team of data scientists to solve business problems using advanced machine learning and complex statistical models on large volumes of data.
• Demonstrate strong thought leadership and consult with product and business stakeholders to build, scale, and deploy holistic data science products after successful prototyping.
• Mentor and guide junior team members in achieving data science outcomes and manage multiple products and initiatives.
• Follow industry best practices, stay up to date with state‑of‑the‑art research and practice, and contribute to publications and patents.
• Participate in internal technical councils and represent the organization in forums for data scientists across industry and academia.
• Promote and support company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity.

• Demonstrable experience architecting large‑scale machine‑learning systems.
• Deep knowledge of machine learning and statistics foundations and significant original contributions to research and practice.
• Solid experience with state‑of‑the‑art agentic, generative‑AI, supervised and unsupervised algorithms on real‑world problems, preferably in the ecommerce domain.
• Strong Python coding skills and proficiency in at least one additional language such as Java or Scala.
• Expertise in SQL/Hive and Spark within a big‑data ecosystem.
• Strong business understanding, stakeholder management, and mentoring of data scientists in deploying ML solutions.

• PhD with >10 years of experience or Master’s degree with >12 years of experience in Computer Science or a related area (experience must be relevant to the role).
• Good to have: experience in the ecommerce domain; demonstrated success on data science platforms such as Kaggle.
