We are currently looking for a Streets Lead Worker-Programs (vegetation) to join our team. This is a journey-level position that performs a wide variety of street maintenance duties including the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City's roadway, signs, traffic control and walkway infrastructure. This position will act as a lead to one or more small work groups; reporting to the crew leaders of the section and supervised by the Street Maintenance Superintendent who reports to an Operations Manager.
The person in this position must be capable of learning and performing all aspects of the Street Maintenance workload. Primary focus will be vegetation management.
Responsibilities include:
- Trim and remove trees, remove unwanted, diseased, or dying limbs on trees, or to affect the health and safety of trees or surrounding areas.
- Tree identification and industry pruning guidelines.
- Perform at a journey-level all general duties necessary to install, repair, and maintain the City's roadway and walkway infrastructure.
- Organize, lead and perform work activities related to multiple Streets Maintenance Programs.
- Maintain infrastructure inventories, assess condition of transportation infrastructure and document results using related automated databases.
- Develop a weekly and monthly schedule of work assignments for subordinate employees at multiple concurrent locations.
- Monitor crew production costs of projects/tasks.
- Lead subordinates in the development of a team environment, train crew members, document and monitor work performance.
- Schedule, assign and maintain program and function-related equipment.
- Monitor availability of supplies and reorder as appropriate.
- Coordinate the use of shared resources with other work team leaders.
- Process customer requests promptly and conduct follow-up as necessary.
- Comply with City policies and codes and enforce safety regulations.
- Handle on-site questions and concerns from the public.
- Respond to emergencies such as wind, ice and snow or damage to the system infrastructure.
- Lead/motivate all members of the work group and ensure employee and public safety in all weather conditions.
- Oversee the use, care and operation of maintenance equipment.
- Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy and compliance.
- Oversee vegetation management safety investigations and corrective action plans.
- Contribute to implementation and creation of new concepts, processes, and ideas to further vegetation management program advancement.
- One year of experience leading or supervising a work group.
- Experience delivering quality customer service to the public.
- Basic computer experience in word processing and spreadsheet software required.
- Clear and concise oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively interact with, and demonstrate leadership to subordinates, peers, and supervisors.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime or changing shifts.
- Ability to perform effectively with little or no supervision.
- Five years of experience in municipal maintenance or general construction activities.
- WSDA pesticide applicator license or ability to obtain.
- Arborist certification or TCIA Certified tree care safety professional.
- Forestry or horticulture background with field experience.
- The selected candidate will be required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
- Preferred current (CDL
A) License or must be able to obtain a Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License within 12 months of employment. - Selected candidates who possess a current CDL must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
- Must meet current eligibility requirements for Washington State-issued CDL/CLP.
- The selected candidate must pass a pre-employment flexibility test and physical capacity test.
- Must possess a Washington State flagging certification.
- Must be able to lift up to 90 lbs. and engage in considerable pulling, pushing, and climbing.
- Work is done mostly outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
- Individuals must have adequate hearing and visual acuity to successfully perform the essential job responsibilities.
