The Volunteer Supervisor plays a key role in managing and supporting the organization’s volunteer program to enhance operations and animal care. This position is responsible for recruiting, training and retaining volunteers, ensuring they have meaningful and impactful experiences that align with Seattle Humane’s mission. The Volunteer Supervisor collaborates with various departments to assess volunteer needs, develop engagement strategies, and maintain a positive and inclusive volunteer culture.
Additionally, they support teams across the organization in scheduling, tracking volunteer performance, and providing ongoing support and recognition to maintain high levels of engagement and satisfaction. This role reports to the Volunteer Services Manager and partners with Volunteer Captains to provide supervision to volunteers in a variety of roles and departments.
- Supervises all organizational volunteer positions, roughly 1,500-2,000 volunteers.
- Coordinates the recruitment, orientation, training, scheduling, retention, advancement and coaching of volunteers to support the staff in maximizing capacity and providing quality care.
- Works closely with all management teams and Volunteer Captains to create, support and maintain a strong working relationship between the team members and volunteers.
- Creates and sources volunteer training materials, including those specifically focused on animal handling.
- Consults with program managers on programmatic needs and identify clear strategies and KPIs for meeting those needs.
- Monitors volunteer schedules and proactively identify gaps in coverage to ensure consistent volunteer support, utilizing the Digital Cheetah volunteer management system and tools.
- Develop new volunteer positions to meet organizational needs, activating existing and new volunteers to fill those roles.
- Works with Volunteer Services Manager and External Relations Director to identify new revenue opportunities and engage volunteers in philanthropy to help support the operational sustainability of the program and the organization.
- Supports the team in creating and maintaining the volunteer handbook, reference documents, SOPs and process documents as needed, in addition to contributing to weekly, monthly and quarterly volunteer communications from Volunteer Services or individual departments.
- Supports the team in planning volunteer appreciation efforts, including the annual volunteer picnic.
- Works with Volunteer Captains to supervise all Seattle Humane volunteers, directly supervises Shelter Support Volunteers and Volunteer Trainers.

- Ability to present information to a large group of people while adapting to different learning and working styles.
- Ability to generate excitement and influence.
Medium degree of independent judgment required. Must be able to coordinate staff and volunteers and remain focused on the agency’s goals and objectives. A strong attention to detail and the ability to respond to unexpected questions, comments or requests from other departments or the public is required. The ability to motivate, collaborate and mediate is important when handling various personalities and emotions.
Knowledge/Experience/Educationor Training
- The ability and comfort to drive and train others on driving large outreach or transport vehicles.
