Description

The Operating Room Nurse provides patient care in a surgical setting in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice and the policies, values, and mission of Children’s National. The RN monitors and manages the patient and operative environment during surgery to maintain safety, optimize outcomes and maximize available resources. All nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children’s National Policies and Procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.

The Professional Model of Care requires registered professional nurses to be responsible and accountable for their own practice.

An RN is an independent practitioner who functions as a resource to staff in a patient care area. The RN will provide comprehensive patient care to a variety of patients, incorporate the health‑care team in planning and delivery, handle complex clinical problems, conduct rapid assessments, manage emergencies, and demonstrate evidence‑based practice through participation in unit projects and activities.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
  • Associate’s Degree from an approved school of nursing – Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree (BSN) – Preferred
Minimum Work Experience
  • At least 2 years of operating room experience – Required
  • At least 2 years experience in at least two of the following specialties:
    Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Orthopedics‑Spine, General Surgery, Colorectal, ENT, Da Vinci Robotic, Kidney Transplant – Required
  • 1 year Pediatric OR experience – Preferred
Required Skills and Knowledge
  • Complete hospital and nursing orientation at Children’s National
  • Excel in organizational skills, adjust for changes, and complete assignments on time
  • Maintain proficiency in at least three specialties from the list above
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn new technology
  • Adaptability, partnership building, collaboration, communication, diversity & inclusion, decision making, relationship management, workload management
Required Licenses and Certifications
  • Registered Nurse licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia – Required
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) – Required
  • Certified Nurse OR (CNOR) – Preferred
Functional Accountabilities
  • Consult & coordinate with the healthcare team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate intra‑operative patient care plans
  • Serve as communication liaison to patients, families, and operating team members
  • Prepare the operation room, assemble equipment, supplies, and implants, ensuring functionality and availability
  • Deliver peri‑operative patient- and family-centered care incorporating the nursing process and evidence-based practice
  • Utilize outcome data to inform care decisions
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and use performance measures to assess unit performance
  • Guide and oversee orientees in all patient care activities, ensuring adherence to documentation, standards of care, and policies
  • Participate in unit shared governance initiatives to improve patient care and throughput
  • Navigate and document in the EMR
  • Validate knowledge of risk and safety issues, participate in Universal Protocol, conduct post‑procedure pauses, and use positioning devices appropriately
  • Follow instrument count procedures and initiate corrective actions if errors occur
  • Verify medications, concentrations, and expiration dates with the sterile field
  • Communicate unsafe observations or concerns and stop at uncertainty to resolve situations
  • Maintain accurate, clear, and timely verbal and written communication
  • Promote safety for patients, families, visitors, and coworkers
  • Show accountability, adhere to policies and training, mentor preceptors, and support organizational improvement initiatives
Organizational Accountabilities
  • Maintain regulatory requirements, such as licenses and BLS
  • Engage in professional activities to enhance nursing practice
