Registered Nurse 2 On-Call – Spokane Veterans Home

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse 2 On-Call will provide resident‑centered care, ensuring a safe and healthy environment, and supporting the operational staffing needs of the 24/7 facility.

Shift Premium

Eligible for a $1.00 Supplemental Basic Shift Premium per hour for 24/7 facilities, which expires on June 29, 2027. Overtime hours are not covered.

On‑Call Expectations

Staff must be available to work as needed, with a minimum of three shifts per week on two different shifts. Shifts are scheduled on a rotational basis.

Hybrid/Telework

This position is not eligible for telework.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain healthcare records according to current policies and procedures.
  • Administer medications and treatments for residents unable to do their own or monitor self‑pour medications of residents.
  • Maintain incident log and provide learning experiences and feedback regarding incidents for direct care staff on unit.
  • Encourage and empower residents and staff to meet residents' needs and requirements in a respectful and homelike environment.
  • Maintain open communication and information‑sharing with staff.
  • Assist in the presentation of training materials to staff.
  • Perform nursing assessments of residents as necessitated by the condition of the resident, and on a quarterly basis for the completion of the Minimum Data Set.
  • Assume responsibility for self‑development by awareness of new techniques and medications.
  • Make rounds on a regular basis to ensure compliance with expectations of the unit.
  • Hold the staffing book as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Currently holds a valid RN license from the State of Washington.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • One year of professional nursing experience (education and experience may be considered on a year‑for‑year basis). Experience must be relevant to the position.
  • Must be able to use accurate methods and practices of nursing and restorative care; personal hygiene and sanitation methods, record keeping, report preparation, infection control procedures and resident rights.
  • Must be able to assess, evaluate, and participate in the development of appropriate plans of care and perform selected nursing procedures.
  • Must be proficient in the English language and be able to read, write and speak English.
  • Agency required competencies: the ability to take action to learn and grow; the ability to take action to meet the needs of others.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of experience as an RN.
  • Must be able to provide a positive living environment for residents in relation to meeting psychosocial needs; follow written and verbal directions; document and report observed changes in patient condition and behavior.
  • Must be able to earn trust, respect and confidence of residents, coworkers and customers through consistent honesty, forthrightness and professionalism in all interactions. Serve as an effective and positive role model to staff.
  • Long‑term care experience.
Special Requirements
  • Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check every two years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks.
  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards.
  • Remain current on CPR.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. and reach a minimum of 36" using proper technique.
  • Must maintain a valid practical nursing license from the State of Washington Department of Health.
  • Must maintain regular and reliable attendance and be willing to work as needed.
  • Must successfully complete within mandated time frames employee orientation and all other mandatory annual, in‑service, and other required training.
  • Must become familiar with and comply with all DVA policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
