The Environmental Planning and Compliance Practice is seeking an Natural Resources Biologist in Bellevue, WA.
Are you motivated by helping communities protect their natural resources and navigate environmental and land use regulations? Do you enjoy working on a wide variety of projects and building strong client relationships? The Natural Resources Biologist will focus on inventorying and analyzing environmental resources and obtaining permits for a wide variety of transportation, energy, water, and land development projects throughout the region.
Day to day work will include field work (wetland delineation, sensitive species surveys, habitat assessments, etc.), preparing permit applications, writing technical reports, etc.
What You'll Do
Key Responsibilities:
Environmental Compliance
* Conduct wetland delineations and other environmental/habitat surveys
* Assist with the development of:
* Environmental permit applications, including Joint Aquatic Resources Permit Applications (JARPA), Hydraulic Project Approvals (HPA), and State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance documentation
* Critical areas reports, wetland delineation reports, and functional assessments
* Mitigation and monitoring plans
* Sensitive species survey reports
* Biological Assessments and other ESA documentation
* Other natural resource documents
* Perform desktop studies to identify environmental resources and impacts
* Conduct water quality monitoring
* Perform monitoring of mitigation sites
Stakeholder Engagement
* Engage with regulatory agencies, local communities, and other stakeholders to address concerns and build positive relationships.
* Communicate project details and environmental compliance to relevant parties.
What You Bring
Required Qualifications:
* Education:
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, or related field.
* Experience:
1+ years in environmental science, permitting, and compliance
* Ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions across the western states; must be available for occasional travel (up to 30%)
Desired
Skills:
* Highly organized and self motivated
* Excellent technical writing skills and strong attention to detail
* Experience with Microsoft Office Suite:
Word, Excel, Outlook
* Experience conducting field surveys and quantitative documentation of natural resources
* Experience with water quality monitoring and equipment
* Knowledge of and experience with Pacific Northwest plants, fish, and wildlife. Direct experience with environmental documentation in eelgrass habitats is a plus
* Knowledge of and experience with GIS (Arc Pro and Arc Map) and with GPS data collection
* Enthusiasm in providing high quality data and work products
* Ability to work in a highly flexible, team-oriented environment
Preferred Qualifications:
* 3+ years in environmental planning, permitting, and compliance, with a proven track record in regulatory approvals and impact assessment. Advanced degree can be used as a substitute for relevant experience based on major and subjects studied.
* Knowledge of, and experience with, state and federal environmental regulations and guidance, such as the CWA, ESA, NEPA, and SEPA
* Knowledge of, and experience with, preparing NEPA and SEPA documents, technical reports, wetland delineations, and mitigation requirements
* Experience preparing permit environmental applications for water, transportation, development, and/or energy projects
* Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CESCL) certification, or willingness to become certified, is a plus
