Biotechnology Regulatory Fellowship Program – Now Accepting Applications for 2027!

The National Academies’ Biotechnology Regulatory Fellowship Program is accepting applications for its 2027 session! This full-time, six-month professional development opportunity is open to a broad range of early-career professionals with scientific, medical, economic, legal, policy, and other professional backgrounds who have a demonstrable interest or passion in the regulation of cutting‑edge products. The Fellowship is administered by the National Academies’ Office of Fellowships for the Committee on Science, Technology, and Law and takes place in Washington, D.C.

Overview

The Biotechnology Regulatory Fellowship is a six‑month, immersive program that provides early‑career professionals with an opportunity to explore the regulatory landscape for novel products of biotechnology. Fellows will:

  • Explore evolving areas of biotechnology regulation and risk assessment;
  • Conduct horizon‑scanning to identify biotechnology products that may pose future regulatory challenges;
  • Work in multidisciplinary teams to develop capstone projects with real‑world impact;
  • Have opportunities to work with mentors currently or formerly employed at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA),
    Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA);
  • Present their work to the Biotechnology Regulatory Fellowship Advisory Committee
    , mentors, agency staff, and other stakeholders.

Fellows will also have access to educational activities, including Academies’ convenings, Congressional hearings, think‑tank events, and industry conferences.

Award Details
  • Stipend: $70,000 (paid in monthly installments)
  • Duration: 6 months, full‑time (37.5 hours/week)
  • Location: In‑person in Washington, D.C.

Note:

Fellows are not eligible for National Academies employee benefits.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
    ;
  • Hold an advanced degree in a relevant field and
  • Have 3–5 years of relevant professional experience
    .
