Job Description - Special Police Officer (Variable Shifts) (260000Y3)

Special Police Officers (SPOs) will provide protective services for the patients, families, staff, and property of Children’s National Health System (CNHS). As directed, CNHS SPOs respond to emergency situations while enforcing the established hospital policies and in accordance with the laws of the District of Columbia. Department personnel must maintain a tactful and courteous demeanor while exercising duties. They will perform access control using state-of-the-art technology to ensure the safety of patients, conduct security patrols across the entire campus to proactively identify risks, and frequently work with medical professionals in advancement of patient safety.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

High School Diploma or GED (Required)

Minimum Work Experience

2 years work experience as a Special Police Officer (Preferred)

Required Skills/Knowledge
  • Valid US Driver’s license required.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to sit and stand for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb stairs in response to emergency situations.
  • Ability to wear department‑issued body armor.
  • Ability to work outdoors if necessary.
  • Ability to handle volatile situations under stressful conditions.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of the criminal code in Washington, DC.
  • Experience working as an emergency responder (law enforcement, fire/rescue, military).
  • Knowledge of HIPAA rules and restrictions.
Required Licenses and Certifications
  • Special Police Officer commission from the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (Required).
Functional Accountabilities Safety
  • Perform productive security patrols of the hospital, garage and perimeter; recognize conditions which may compromise the security and/or safety of the organization and take immediate action to mitigate; proactively submit work orders to correct safety/security violations discovered during patrols.
  • Immediately notify supervisors of security/safety-related problems or issues.
  • Take proactive measures to mitigate thefts, disturbances, and other criminal incidents.
  • Check to ensure that visitors and staff members are wearing proper identification badges/passes; ensure that visitors are properly identified and proactively address non‑compliance observed during patrols; adhere to departmental and hospital policies, procedures and directives as it relates to the management and processing of visitors to the hospital.
  • Adhere to post orders for all fixed and patrol positions.
  • Speak up when team members appear to exhibit unsafe behavior or performance.
  • Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation.
  • Stop in the face of uncertainty and take time to resolve the situation.
  • Demonstrate accurate, clear and timely verbal and written communication.
  • Actively promote safety for patients, families, visitors and co‑workers.
  • Attend carefully to important details – practicing Stop, Think, Act and Review to self‑check behavior and performance.
Emergency Response
  • Ensure a timely and appropriate response for emergency situations.
  • Ensure that applicable policies, procedures and directives are followed according to the specifics of the emergency situation.
  • Be able to effectively de‑escalate disruptive behavior.
  • Remain in control of emotions and avoid personally taking out behavior exhibited by others.
