The Fleet and Communications Division of the Finance & Asset Management Department is recruiting to fill a Heavy
- Duty Mechanical Services Technician position. The position works collaboratively with a team of heavy duty technicians performing maintenance and repair on the City of Bellevue’s fleet of vehicles and equipment. This is skilled work in the repair and maintenance of automotive, medium and heavy duty trucks, off road construction equipment, large mowers, tractors, and specialized equipment, including both gas and diesel engines.

This is a full time Teamster Local 763 Union position. Currently, the work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., however, candidates must be willing to work alternative shifts, weekends, and be on call during emergency operations.

  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment following a prescribed format and documentation.
  • Interacts with team members and crew lead on work in progress status.
  • Ensures all equipment warranty, recall, and service bulletin issues are performed per policy.
  • Performs diagnostics and repairs on varying types of light and heavy duty vehicles and equipment (e.g. gas and diesel engines on sedans, vans, light trucks, construction equipment, turf maintenance equipment, medium/heavy trucks, generators and pumps, etc.).
  • Performs diagnostics and repairs on electrical and electronic systems including alternators, batteries, auxiliary lighting systems, light bars, siren systems, ignitions, fuel controls, engine control modules, and instrument panels.
  • Makes emergency repairs in the field and in the City’s fleet shop, during normal shift hours and/or after hours.
  • Performs testing, diagnostics and repairs on all emission components.
  • Performs cutting/welding (gas and electric) tasks and provides estimates for fabrication costs.
  • Troubleshoots onsite equipment problems and coordinates with team members when utilizing outside vendors.
  • Coordinates with the crew lead and/or parts personnel when encountering expensive, hard to find, back-ordered, or otherwise out of the ordinary parts situations.
  • Makes timely and accurate entries into a computerized maintenance system about work performed; includes time, parts, repair codes, and other related information.
  • Prepares new vehicles to go in service by installing aftermarket equipment and electronic components.
  • Performs emergency response functions and may be required to be available on a standby basis to provide services.
  • Decommissions vehicles and equipment for remarketing.
  • Attends meetings and trainings as required.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Works under the direction of the Fleet Maintenance Manager or designee, within the context of a work team environment. Employees work with minimal or no supervision while performing individual tasks.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

  • Experience in a fleet vehicle or mechanic shop in a high-volume, specialized repair facility.
  • Familiarity with brake systems, tune-ups, automated mechanical analyzers and parts, engine repair, etc.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools including drills, hydraulic presses, jacks, hoists, and electronic motor analyzers.
  • Ability to use tanks, safety equipment, and other components necessary for MIG, ARC, aluminum, steel, and acetylene welding and cutting.
  • Knowledge of or experience with vehicle hydraulic, electrical, and fuel systems.
  • Possesses own tools and is willing to upgrade them as required to efficiently perform tasks. Familiarity with wide variety of special-use vehicles.
  • Ability to troubleshoot/diagnose trouble codes to determine repairs using diagnostic software.
  • Experience using vehicle/equipment maintenance software (Maximo preferred) and navigate other software such as Alldata or Mitchel.
  • Experience using a personal computer and Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, co-workers, vendors and others both orally and in writing.
