The City of Bellevue Transportation Department Signal and Lighting shop is seeking a Signal Electrician that is self‑motivated and team oriented. The position is responsible for repair and maintenance of traffic signals, street lighting systems, pedestrian signals, and related electrical equipment, including locating and repairing defective circuits.
A successful candidate possessing a Journeyman Electrician License (EL01) issued by the Department of Labor and Industries and four years of experience as a journeyman electrician after obtaining an EL01 license may be eligible for a premium add‑to‑pay of 7.5%.
Responsibilities- Maintains a clean, safe work environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Planning, scheduling, and monitoring work.
- Ensures compliance with city, county, state, and federal regulations.
- Enters service work requests and physical infrastructure information into the maintenance management system.
- Diagnoses malfunctioning traffic signal equipment, makes electrical repairs, and/or replaces modular electronic equipment as required.
- Diagnoses and repairs malfunctioning traffic signal equipment and street lighting systems.
- Locates and marks traffic signal and street lighting underground equipment.
- Develops and maintains records showing locations and types of existing underground street lighting and traffic signal systems.
- Responds to emergencies on a 24‑hour basis.
- Extensive knowledge of electrical circuitry, traffic signal, ITS, and street lighting systems.
- Thorough knowledge of the National Electrical Code, Washington State Administrative Code and Bellevue Standard plans and Specifications.
- Ability to diagnose electrical failures through problem solving, identifying alternative causes of malfunction, and testing circuits.
- Ability to work safely around high voltage circuits.
- Ability to apply proper safety procedures when working in traffic.
- Ability to work from boom trucks at a height of up to 60 feet.
- Ability to operate power tools such as drills and soldering equipment safely.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines on critical public safety equipment.
- Ability to understand and work from blueprints, engineering plans, specifications, wiring diagrams and to prepare as‑built prints as needed.
- Ability to cooperate within the work group and respond to others courteously.
- Ability to deal effectively with contractors, engineers, designers, city staff and the public in a courteous and effective manner.
- Computer aptitude and interest and/or training related to this position.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Possession of a Journeyman Electrician License (EL01) issued by the Department of Labor and Industries and four years of experience as a journeyman electrician after obtaining an EL01 license.
- Possession of a current, valid Washington State driver’s license and a good safety and driving record. Driving is a core duty of this role.
- Possession of an IMSA Level II Certification as a Signal Electrician, or the ability to obtain within 2 years.
- Possession of a Washington State Traffic Control Flaggers Card, or the ability to obtain within 1 year.
- Must have or be able to obtain a Washington State Class B Commercial Driver’s License and valid medical card within six months of employment.
- Selected candidates must pass a pre‑employment drug and alcohol test (consistent with federal laws requiring testing of all job classifications requiring a CDL).
- In‑house applicants who do not currently possess a CDL will be subject to the pre‑employment drug and alcohol test in accordance with DOT rules and regulations.
- Work involves walking, talking, listening, using hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color differentiation, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee may be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry objects up to 50 pounds.
