Mechanical Services Technician – Fleet and Communications Division
This Teamster Local 763 Union position is part of the Fleet and Communications Division of the Finance & Asset Management Department. The technician works with a team of heavy‑ and light‑duty technicians maintaining the City of Bellevue’s fleet of vehicles and equipment, including automotive, medium and heavy‑duty trucks, off‑road construction equipment, large mowers, tractors and specialized equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment using prescribed procedures and documentation.
- Interact with team members and crew lead regarding work progress status.
- Ensure warranty, recall, and service bulletin issues are addressed per policy.
- Diagnose and repair light‑ and heavy‑duty vehicles and equipment (gas and diesel engines, electrical and electronic systems).
- Makes emergency repairs in the field and in the fleet shop during normal and after‑hours shifts.
- Perform basic cutting and welding (gas and electric) and provide estimates for fabrication costs.
- Troubleshoot onsite equipment problems and coordinate with vendors when necessary.
- Communicate parts needs to the crew lead or parts personnel for hard‑to‑find components.
- Record work performed in the computerized maintenance system, including time, parts, repair codes and other details.
- Prepare new vehicles for service by installing aftermarket equipment and electronic components.
- Respond to emergency functions and may be required on standby for services.
- Decommission vehicles and equipment for remarketing.
- Attend meetings and trainings as required and maintain reliable attendance.
- Experience in a fleet vehicle or mechanic shop in a high‑volume, specialized repair facility.
- Preferred experience with emergency response vehicles (fire apparatus, medic units).
- Preferred experience with heavy‑duty trucks, off‑road construction equipment, large mowers, tractors.
- Knowledge of brake systems, tune‑ups, and automated mechanical analyzers.
- Ability to use hand and power tools, hydraulic presses, jacks, hoists, and electronic motor analyzers.
- Experience with MIG, ARC, aluminum, steel, and acetylene welding and cutting.
- Knowledge of vehicle hydraulic, electrical, and fuel systems.
- Proficiency with vehicle/equipment maintenance software (Maximo preferred) and other tools such as Alldata or Mitchell.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams).
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Team player, proactive self‑starter with strong problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work under constant interruptions and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated knowledge of equipment and supplies used for vehicle and equipment maintenance.
- High school graduation or GED, supplemented with trade or college automotive coursework.
- Three or more years of progressively responsible mechanical technician experience, or equivalent education/experience.
- Valid, current Washington State driver’s license; ability to obtain one if not yet issued.
- Must obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement after a one‑year trial service period.
- Must obtain ASE Truck Brake (T4), ASE Automotive Brake (A5), and 609 Air Conditioning Certification within the first year of hire.
- Walking, talking, hearing, hands operating tools and controls, and reaching with hands and arms.
- Vision requirements include close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
- May be required to push, pull, lift, or carry up to 50 pounds.
- Work performed mainly in a vehicle maintenance shop; occasional outdoor work and remote site visits may be necessary.
- Hazards include traffic, heavy or sharp equipment, flammable liquids or fuels, high voltage, noise, and confined spaces.
- May be required to work off‑duty to complete repairs during peak vehicle utilization periods.
- Investigations of emergency vehicle accidents may expose to infection from discarded medical equipment and bodily fluids.
