About the Role

The Rolling stock / Yard Master plays a key role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the rail yard. Working as part of the Yard Operations team, you will be responsible for coordinating the movement of rolling stock, supporting daily yard operations, conducting inspections, and maintaining the cleanliness and presentation of passenger trains and facilities.

This is a hands‑on role requiring a strong commitment to safety, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a close-knit team.

Please note: This role predominantly involves night shifts and weekend work
, with applicable penalty rates paid in accordance with the relevant award or enterprise agreement.

Key Responsibilities Yard Operations
  • Coordinate and safely manage the movement of passenger rolling stock within the rail yard.
  • Drive or pilot passenger trains within the yard (following competency training and authorisation).
  • Follow all movement authorities, signalling requirements, and operational procedures.
  • Maintain clear radio communication with train drivers and yard personnel.
Rolling stock Support
  • Conduct pre-service inspections on incoming trains.
  • Review driver logbooks and identify maintenance or operational issues.
  • Report defects and liaise with maintenance personnel.
  • Assist with minor rolling stock and facility maintenance tasks as trained.
Cleaning & Presentation
  • Wash, rinse and clean passenger trains.
  • Remove graffiti using approved cleaning products and equipment.
  • Refill water supplies and consumables.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised yard environment.
General Yard Duties
  • Install and remove promotional posters.
  • Weed spraying and general grounds maintenance.
  • Housekeeping and waste removal.
  • Support additional operational tasks as required.
About You

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

  • A strong commitment to safety and following procedures.
  • Excellent spoken English and clear radio communication skills.
  • Reliability with outstanding attendance and punctuality.
  • Physical fitness, including the ability to:
    • Climb in and out of train cabs.
    • Walk on uneven ground.
    • Perform manual handling tasks.
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Strong teamwork skills while also being capable of working independently.
  • Confidence to speak up when safety or operational issues arise.
  • Flexibility to work a rotating roster.
Essential Requirements
  • Current Australian Class C Driver’s Licence.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all required rail competencies.
  • Ability to pass:
    • Pre-Employment Medical
    • Drug & Alcohol Screening
    • National Police Clearance
  • Full Australian working rights.
Desirable Experience

While not essential, the following will be highly regarded:

  • Previous experience within the rail industry.
  • Yard operations or shunting experience.
  • Transport, logistics or heavy industrial experience.
  • Mechanical aptitude or maintenance experience.
  • Experience working in safety‑critical environments.
Working Hours

This position operates on a roster that includes:

  • Predominantly night shifts
  • Regular weekend shifts
  • Public holiday work as required
  • Overtime opportunities

Night shift, weekend and applicable overtime penalty rates are paid.
