Position: Lifeguard (Part-Time)

The City of Bellflower is recruiting for a part-time Lifeguard to join the City’s dynamic Parks and Recreation team. Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply without delay. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about water safety, first aid, and community engagement.

Under general supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor, lifeguards are responsible for the safety and rescue of facility patrons at the Bellflower Aquatic Center. Lifeguards perform emergency care as necessary and respond to unsafe conditions or potential hazards. Lifeguards observe swimmers, enforce regulations, and perform related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from a Program Coordinator, and Aquatic Specialist. Lifeguard exercises no supervision.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry level in the class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the position at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern.

Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain locker rooms, walkways, rest room facilities, and pool areas.
  • Maintain a constant vigil over patrons of the aquatic center; rescue persons in distress.
  • Assist with maintaining discipline and orderly conduct among patrons and enforcing all pertinent aquatic center rules and regulations.
  • Complete aquatic center facility and program reports as required.
  • Render first aid, CPR, and water safety procedures.
  • Answer questions and provide information to the public.
  • Perform aquatic center maintenance as required.
  • Move tables and chairs; set up booths; hang banners; carry equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of
  • Water safety, first aid and preventive life saving.
  • Aquatic and swimming instruction, skills, and rules.
  • Laws and regulations relating to swimming pools
Ability to
  • Operate and use a variety of water safety and pool equipment including guard alarm, rescue tube, pocket mask, bag valve mask, and backboard.
  • Swim with proficiency and endurance.
  • Perform current swimming rescues and first aid/CPR techniques.
  • Supervise aquatic participants.
  • Conduct work in a safe manner in accordance with established policy.
  • Enforce rules and regulations.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience

Must be at least 16 years of age and enrolled in High School supplemented by training in lifeguard and swimming instruction. Enrollment in college with a major in Recreation or a related field is highly desirable.

Lifeguard:
Some prior experience as a lifeguard is desirable

Licenses and Certifications

Must possess a valid American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding, Community First Aid and Safety, and CPR certification for the Professional Rescuer. Applicants not currently certified will be required to successfully complete a Red Cross Lifeguard certification within six weeks of hire. City staff will conduct the training at no cost to the applicant. Applicants failing to meet this requirement will not pass probation and their employment will be terminated.

Red Cross Lifeguard Certification will not be released to the applicant until after six months of employment. Must pass Title 22 requirements within six month of hire. Successful completion of a pre-employment skills test.

Physical Demands

Must possess the ability to sit, stand, walk, run, crouch, stoop, squat, kneel, pull, twist, climb, swim lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be available for an irregular work schedule.

Environmental Elements

Employees may work in the field and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperatures, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR. Employees are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

Part-time approximately 15-25 hours per week. May be required to work evenings and weekends.
Seasonal employment. May extend beyond seasonal employment depending on performance and availability.
