Position SummaryElementary Teacher plans curriculum and instruction appropriate for students in primary grades, observing and evaluating their abilities, strengths, and weaknesses to support learning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Plans Curriculum and Instruction- Use content standards of relevant curriculum frameworks to plan sequential units, lessons, and learning activities that build cumulative knowledge.
- Use formal and informal assessment results and knowledge of human development to identify effective teaching strategies and activities appropriate for age, English proficiency, and cognitive levels.
- Select appropriate reading materials, resources, and writing activities to promote learning across the classroom.
- Identify prerequisite skills, concepts, and vocabulary needed for learning activities.
- Plan lessons with clear objectives and measurable outcomes.
- Leverage resources from colleagues, families, and the community to enhance learning.
- Incorporate technology and media in lesson planning.
- Use IEP information to plan strategies for integrating students with disabilities into general education classrooms.
- Adapt instruction to support students of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
- Make learning objectives clear to students.
- Communicate clearly in writing, speaking, and via visual and contextual aids.
- Begin new units or lessons with engaging approaches.
- Build on students' prior knowledge and experience.
- Balance teaching of reading and writing skills and concepts.
- Employ a mix of direct instruction, practice, Socratic dialogue, discussion, problem‑solving, cooperative learning, and research projects.
- Demonstrate knowledge and approach to academic content.
- Employ varied reading and writing strategies to meet objectives.
- Use questioning to stimulate thinking and encourage responses.
- Integrate instructional technology appropriately.
- Implement strategies to make content accessible to English learners.
- Differentiate instruction based on social and academic language needs.
- Assign homework or practice that extends learning and checks understanding.
- Provide regular, frequent feedback on progress.
- Offer many varied opportunities for students to achieve competence.
- Measure achievement and progress with formal and informal assessments, using results to plan further instruction.
- Translate evaluations into accurate records for students, parents, and staff.
- Create and maintain a safe, collaborative learning environment that values diversity and motivates high performance.
- Set up a physical environment suitable for varied learning activities.
- Maintain standards of behavior, mutual respect, and safety.
- Manage classroom routines and procedures with minimal instructional loss.
- Encourage all students to believe effort leads to achievement.
- Promote achievement for every student.
- Assess how home background, learning pace, and English proficiency impact learning, adjusting instruction accordingly.
- Help students understand civic culture and their role as community members.
- Collaborate with families to support learning and development at home and school.
- Understand legal and moral responsibilities.
- Convey enthusiasm for academic discipline.
- Stay informed about current research and developments in the discipline.
- Collaborate with colleagues to improve instruction and assessment.
- Actively involve parents and communicate clear updates.
- Reflect on teaching to identify professional development needs.
- Understand ethical Internet use and other resources.
- Knowledge of Massachusetts ELA and Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks.
- Deep understanding of evidence‑based teaching practices for literacy, math, and science.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check and fingerprint check.
- Bachelor’s Degree required;
Master’s Degree in elementary education preferred. - Minimum of 3 years of successful 1‑6 teaching experience preferred.
- Must be SEI Endorsed.
