Title:
Jazz Band (BMS)

FUNCTION:
To assume the responsibility for directing and supervising appropriate activities such as rehearsals and performances. Directly responsible to the building principal.

• Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior, to provide an orderly productive environment for all band related activities.
• Creates a schedule for after school rehearsal sessions for Jazz Band and completes building permits.
• Maintain necessary attendance records and paperwork.
• Must accompany the band at all practice sessions and other school‑sanctioned activities.
• Attends to duties as conductor at all scheduled performances of the jazz band, including, but not limited to, those in the school day and those scheduled outside the normal school day.
• Selects and organizes literature that is appropriate for the students participating in Jazz Band.
• Maintains the instruments and music department equipment needed and maintains a music inventory list in coordination with other music staff.
• Teaches and encourages the skills necessary for jazz performance: improvisation, stylistic elements of jazz, ensemble‑playing, and high quality tone production.
• Coordinates and works with other music staff in the organization and implementation of concerts and music performances of the Jazz Band.
• Chaperones music activities and performances for students including but not limited to:
  Central District events, All-State events, MICCA and Bellingham music department concerts and events.
• Assume responsibility for the facility or area in which assigned activity is conducted at all times students are present.
• Assumes responsibilities for related duties that may be assigned by the building principal.
• Adheres to the adopted policies of the Bellingham School Committee.

• Preferably a member of the Bellingham Memorial School teaching staff.
• Experience and background in instrumental music and jazz improvisation techniques.

• Dedication to the service of youth.
• Demonstrated ability to relate favorably with students.

Position Type: Stipend

Salary: $1,800 to $1,800 Stipend
