Swim lesson Instructor

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor at Whatcom Family YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swim classes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

To instruct participants of all ages how to swim in accordance with the swim program of the YMCA.

To be on time and prepared for classes.

To be responsible for setting up and putting away any equipment used to teach.

To take attendance on appropriate rosters and turn in to supervisor at the conclusion of the lesson session.

To fill out appropriate progress report for each student taught.

To communicate with parents about the progress of their child.

To provide positive customer service to all participants.

To attend all staff meetings.

To promote all programs of the YMCA, and model the core values of the YMCA.

To be knowledgeable of emergency procedures.

To keep current and obtain appropriate certifications.

To follow procedures set forth by the Aquatic Director of the Whatcom Family YMCA.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent.
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications within 90 days of hire.
• Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
• At least 16 years of age.

• Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
