Salary Range: $19.18 per hour.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor at Whatcom Family YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swim classes.

• To instruct participants of all ages how to swim in accordance with the swim program of the YMCA.
• To be on time and prepared for classes.
• To be responsible for setting up and putting away any equipment used to teach.
• To take attendance on appropriate rosters and turn in to supervisor at the conclusion of the lesson session.
• To fill out appropriate progress report for each student taught.
• To communicate with parents about the progress of their child.
• To provide positive customer service to all participants.
• To attend all staff meetings.
• To promote all programs of the YMCA, and model the core values of the YMCA.
• To be knowledgeable of emergency procedures.
• To keep current and obtain appropriate certifications.
• To follow procedures set forth by the Aquatic Director of the Whatcom Family YMCA.

• YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent.
• CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications within 90 days of hire.
• Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
• At least 16 years of age.

• Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
• Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
