Assistant Professor of Theatre

The Department of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Theatre, with a start date of September 16, 2027. The role is part of an undergraduate-focused theatre department that combines the strengths of a liberal arts program with the rigor of professional practice.

• Teach introductory and advanced courses in theatre and performance, such as Introduction to Theatre, Directing, and Theatre Education.
• Direct productions in the department’s mainstage season and contribute to the department’s vibrant theatre program.
• Collaborate with fellow faculty, mentor students, and provide equitable and inclusive learning environments.
• Maintain an ongoing practice of creative and/or scholarly activity in the discipline.
• Participate in service activities for the department, college, and university.
• Fulfill recruiting, advising, teaching, and mentoring responsibilities that support the department’s commitment to inclusive education.

• MFA in Acting, Performance, Directing, Playwrighting (or closely related field) at time of application, or PhD in Theatre Arts (or closely related field) at time of application.
• Demonstrated ability to cultivate equitable and inclusive learning and working environments for diverse students and employees.
• Evidence of successful higher‑education teaching experience or commensurate professional experience.
• Record of creative activity and/or scholarship related to theatre arts.
• Effective collaboration and communication skills.

• Experience and enthusiasm in teaching Directing, Theatre Education, and a large Introduction to Theatre survey course.
• Additional expertise in an area of theatre related to the candidate’s interests.
• Evidence of successful directing experience.
• Evidence of creative activity in professional venues.
• Ability to collaborate across disciplines, campus, and community.
• Experience in curriculum development.
• Dedication to a liberal arts educational model compatible with WWU’s mission.

• Starting salary range for assistant professor: $69,000–$74,000, with placement within the full range of $69,000–$86,000 based on qualifications.
