Tribal Education Liaison, Culture Coordinator/Tutor

Supports students and families to promote better school attendance. Works diligently with the Mount Baker and Nooksack Valley School Districts. Work closely with all school personnel regarding matters related to student attendance and welfare. Serves as liaison between district, school, and home to explain legal procedures involving school attendance. Provides one-on-one and group support with school work, modeling social and cultural values, and offering emotional support to youth and Head Start children.

Provide the intergenerational relationships so important to healthy child and youth development by involving elders with school-age activities. Achieve program goals which include increasing school readiness for preschool children, increasing school success for K-12 students. For all children, reinforce social skills, cultural values and resilience. Provide a supportive role model for the classroom, youth program, and be a mentor who can work with children needing extra help to engage in social activities and learning.

Provide extra support academically, as needed, for all Nooksack youth.

Major tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Act as a liaison between the local school districts, Nooksack Indian Tribe, and tribal families.
  • Confer with students and their parents regarding problems or concerns related to student attendance, academics, social/emotional welfare; referrals and HIB Policy.
  • Build communication between school officials and Nooksack Tribe and its families.
  • Meet regularly with local school districts' Truancy Boards.
  • Create attendance reports for monitoring and tracking for intervention or collaboration.
  • Develop MOU's in conjunction with school districts assigned.
  • Coordinate cultural activities to promote cultural awareness, better understanding of our traditional ways, and provide in-school cultural activities with the local districts.
  • Plan and coordinate Parent committee.
  • Respect confidentiality in all communications with families and district personnel.
  • Provide mentoring services while modeling appropriate behaviors and skills, play cultural games, teach manners and social skills; encourage and praise with an emphasis on ancestral teachings, history and culture to emerging teen program.
  • Mentor at-risk students as designated by Education/Head Start/Youth Program staff, offering emotional support and comfort in times of crisis.
  • Bring compassion, social support and cultural values to the students both individually and classroom-wide by talking, reading, playing games, helping with school work, modeling appropriate behavior, participating in native crafts, telling stories, teaching cultural skills, song and dance, and engaging in the practice of tribal language.
  • Assist youth with academic needs as referred.
  • Participate in organizing and conducting parent-teacher conferences for Nooksack families.
  • Develop student success plans as an intervention.
  • Other duties may include a wide range of office and field duties as needed.

    Preference:
    Indian Preference Policy applies to this and all positions with the Nooksack Indian Tribe.

    Minimum qualifications include:

    • Associate Degree from an Accredited College or University in Psychology
    • A minimum of four years working with Native and at-risk children.

    • Fully understand and implement FERPA and sharing of information

    Required conditions of employment include:

    • Must pass alcohol/drug test at time of hire and throughout employment.
    • Must pass criminal background check at time of hire and periodically thereafter.

    Required licenses or certifications include:

    • Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Washington State Driver's License and meet the insurability requirements of the Tribe. (Must Provide Driving Abstract at time of hire).
    • CPR and Frist Aid Certification
    • Life Long Healing for Children and Youth Exposed to Violence Training

    Physical requirements include:

    • The standard work week is 8:30-5:00 Monday through Friday (occasionally may have to work evenings)
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods and frequently required to talk and listen.
    • Sitting for extended periods while at a desk or in meetings.
    • Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard, calculator, and telephone system
    • Ability to lift up to 20+ pounds without assistance occasionally.
    • Typical office setting with environmentally controlled conditions.
