Iwesteleq Miytel/Youth Aide

The Iwesteleq Miytel will work in conjunction with the Education Department in developing and implementing appropriate learning plans for students and families of the Nooksack Indian Tribe. This person will work with the Tribal Liaison and represent the Nooksack Tribe within the school system and advocating on behalf of our students and families and under the direct supervision and leadership of the Teen Enrichment and Prevention Program Manager.

Major tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Provide tutorial support face-to-face, virtually or through distance learning to individuals or small groups of students to improve academic performance, improve occupational skills, or prepare for academic or occupational tests.
  • Assist Iwesteleq to teach students study skills, note-taking skills, and test-taking strategies.
  • Assist Iwesteleq with students' progress throughout tutoring sessions.
  • Collaborate along with the Tribal Liaison and students, families, teachers, school administrators, or counselors to determine student needs, develop tutoring plans, or assess student progress.
  • Assist the Iwestaleq develop teaching or training materials, such as handouts, study materials, or quizzes.
  • Assist staff Identify, develop, or implement intervention strategies, tutoring plans, if needed assist LEAs with IEPs or 504 Plans
  • Be actively involved in Ts simit To:lmels meetings
  • Assist staff prepare lesson plans or learning modules for tutoring sessions according to students' needs and goals.
  • Assist with all educational and youth programs and events depending on the situation (face to face—remotely—virtually)
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times – ensuring a Release of Information is in place
  • Integrate culture and self-identity activities into learning with meaning in alignment with common core standards

Other duties include:

  • Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
  • Support the enrichment and recreation program offerings, including program planning for the Youth Program.
  • Assist with the supervision of Youth Program participants.
  • Participate in all activities with YP Participants
  • Assist Transportation Coordinator as needed
  • Provide transportation to YP Participants and follow safety regulations and abide by laws

Preference:

  • Indian Preference Policy applies to this and all positions with the Nooksack Indian Tribe.

Minimum qualifications:

High School Diploma

Possess at minimum an Associate Degree or working with satisfactory progress toward an Associate Degree

Required skills/knowledge/abilities position:

Must have experience in a classroom setting.

Must have experience working with Tribal Youth

Required conditions of employment:

  • Must pass alcohol/drug test at time of hire and throughout employment.
  • Must pass criminal background check at time of hire and periodically thereafter.

Required licenses or certifications:

  • Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Washington State Driver's License and meet the insurability requirements of the Tribe. (Must Provide Driving Abstract at time of hire).

Physical requirements:

  • The standard work week is 8:30-5:00 Monday through Friday (occasionally may have to work evenings), but schedules may change
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods and frequently required to talk and listen.
  • Sitting for extended periods while at a desk or in meetings.
  • Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard, calculator, and telephone system
  • Ability to lift up to 20+ pounds without assistance occasionally.
  • Typical office setting with environmentally controlled conditions.
  • Read, write, speak and understand English
  • Ability to listen, understands customers, and has the ability to translate rules, regulations, and policies to clients so they understand the issues/problems.
  • Operate in mentally and physically stressful situations with composure.
  • May have to walk/drive between office locations under a variety of conditions.
