Environmental Field & Monitoring Technician (Operations Support)

Location: Bellingham, Washington | In-person, field + office

Classification: Full-time, non-exempt (overtime eligible) after a 90-day contractor trial period (see “Onboarding, Training & First 90 Days”)

Role Overview

The Environmental Field & Monitoring Technician (Operations Support) is a hybrid role combining maintenance field tech and monitoring tech, with light operations support for the consulting staff. You back up the CEO in their role as Mitigation Install & Maintenance Director and support project directors / consultants on other projects. You help install and maintain mitigation projects, collect monitoring data, and keep records and basic project logistics organized.

Busy seasons: mostly field work (install, maintenance, monitoring).

Slower seasons: more monitoring, documentation, and simple ops / consulting support

Key Responsibilities
  • Field Implementation & Maintenance (Primary)
    a. Install mitigation projects per plans and SOPs: staking, planting, erosion control, light construction, etc.
    b. Perform maintenance:
Mechanical invasive removal, replanting, trash/debris cleanup, minor repairs.
    c. Support the CEO, or project director, acting as site lead with safety checks, quality checks, end‑of‑day site cleanup, inventory,
  • Monitoring & Data Collection (Primary)
    a. Perform monitoring visits under direction of a lead: field measurements, photos, notes.
    b. Record and organize GPS points, photo locations, and field sheets per ATSI standards.
    c. Keep field gear, tablets, and tools organized, charged, and ready.
  • Reporting & Operations Support (Secondary)
    a. Organize field notes, photos, and data into company templates.
    b. Populate standard tables, photo logs, and simple figures for monitoring reports.
    c. Help consultants with light ops work: updating simple project trackers, filing permit and agency correspondence, cleaning equipment, scheduling field days and access when needed.
Work Mix & Seasonality

The actual mix of field vs. office work will shift based on project load. Some weeks you’ll be almost entirely in the field; other weeks you’ll have more documentation and operations support.

  • Winter, Spring & Fall:
Roughly 50–90% field install/maintenance + monitoring, 10–50% documentation & ops support, depending on active projects and weather.
  • Summer:
Often more balanced, with roughly 30–80% field / monitoring and 20–70% documentation & ops support, again driven by project needs.

You must be comfortable with physically demanding outdoor work in varied weather and focused desk work on documentation and be ready to go into the field on short notice when priorities shift.

Tools & Support
  • Office base:
Primary work hub in our Bellingham office when not in the field, including a dedicated workstation, computer, and access to ATSI software, hardware, and expertise.
  • Company vehicle provided for work‑related travel between office, yard, and field sites (no personal vehicle required for daily field work).
  • Company trailer and tools provided for installation, maintenance, and monitoring work (you help maintain and organize shared equipment).
  • Safety gear and PPE provided for field work, consistent with ATSI safety standards.
  • Company credit card for approved work expenses (fuel, materials, lodging, etc.) so you do not have to front job costs on your own card.
Onboarding, Training & First 90 Days
  • 90‑day 1099 contractor trial period:
All new hires start with a 90‑day engagement as a 1099 contractor focused on learning ATSI’s systems, safe field practices, and documentation standards.
  • Training & role‑specific memory test (first two weeks):
During the first two weeks, you will complete some structured training, self‑structured training, as well as verbal, written, and practical memory tests covering certain ATSI workflows as well as role specific knowledge. Passing this test is required to continue in the role.
  • Conversion to employee:
At or before day 90, we review field performance, documentation quality, reliability, and cultural fit. Successful contractors are offered full‑time W‑2 employment as non‑exempt employees with overtime eligibility and access to profit‑sharing.
