Whatcom County Health & Community Services is seeking a Temporary Extra Help Doula Coordination and Mentorship Specialist
.
Under the oversight of the Child and Families Program Supervisor and the Maternal Child Health Program Specialist, the Doula Coordination & Mentorship Specialist is responsible for coordinating referrals, managing family–doula matches, and coordinating and implementing mentorship and professional development support for County-contracted doulas within the Healthy Children’s Fund Doula Program. This position ensures timely and equitable access to doula services for perinatal families while strengthening the sustainability, capacity, and professional growth of the doula workforce.
The role emphasizes culturally responsive, equity-centered practices and serves as a key liaison among families, doulas, healthcare providers, and County staff.
Duties include:
- Receive, review, and manage referrals from healthcare providers and community-based professionals serving perinatal populations.
- Verify referral eligibility, including Apple Health/Medicaid, WIC, and other required indicators, and retain required documentation for County reimbursement.
- Coordinate timely and appropriate family–doula matches by assessing doula availability, experience, capacity, and family preferences.
- Track and document referrals, doula assignments, responsiveness, and outcomes, including twice-weekly updates using tracking tools and spreadsheets.
- Send referrals to assigned doulas, confirm receipt, and monitor whether doulas contact families and offer an initial appointment within five (5) business days.
- Provide orientation, communication, and care navigation support to families within five (5) business days of referral.
- Identify and troubleshoot barriers in the referral and service process, including transportation challenges, system navigation issues, and misunderstandings about doula roles.
- Collect, coordinate, and track client satisfaction surveys and feedback.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, privacy standards, and data sovereignty requirements.
- Coordinate individual and group mentorship opportunities by connecting contracted doulas with qualified mentors, trainers, and partner organizations.
- Plan and coordinate monthly check-ins and peer-support opportunities, including case consultation, birth debriefing, and professional support sessions.
- Arrange and coordinate trainings on perinatal topics such as trauma-informed care, perinatal knowledge and skills, ethics, self-care, client advocacy, and equity-centered practices.
- Plan and coordinate monthly one-hour group meetings (virtual or in-person) focused on peer support, skill sharing, and professional development.
- Provide ongoing logistical support, scheduling assistance, and responsive communication to doulas between meetings.
- Connect doulas with relevant community and professional resources to support clients and families.
- Collaborate regularly with County staff and contracted partners on program improvement, sustainability planning, and identification of mentorship and training needs.

Work LocationFlexible/Hybrid; coordination with County staff and community partners as required (virtual and/or in-person as program needs dictate).
Hours of WorkUp to 48 hours per month (part-time, hourly, temporary).
Wage$31.14 per hour.
Requirements- Strong understanding of Apple Health/Medicaid eligibility and community-based health systems.
- Demonstrated commitment to culturally responsive, equity-centered practices, with an emphasis on supporting BIPOC, multilingual, and lived-experience doulas.
- Strong organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to manage multiple time sensitive referrals, deadlines, and partnerships effectively.
- Ability to handle confidential information and comply with HIPAA, privacy, and data sovereignty requirements.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with County staff, healthcare providers, doulas, and community partners.
- Experience desired, but not required in doula work, perinatal care coordination, maternal-child health, or a related healthcare, community or government program field preferred.
