Custodian 2 – Class 678J – Whatcom Community College

Whatcom Community College (WCC) is a public associate and applied baccalaureate degree‑granting institution that serves 7,604 students annually on its 72‑acre campus in Bellingham, Washington.

General Description of Work

Under general supervision of the Custodial Supervisor, the Custodian 2 performs custodial and maintenance tasks to maintain cleanliness of facilities. Duties include rounds, lock doors, close windows, turn off lights, stock supplies, identify maintenance problems, and support campus sustainability efforts. Work areas are assigned by the supervisor and may change on a regular rotation.

Responsibilities
  • Flexibility to adjust shift with advanced notice to meet institutional needs.
  • Perform general and deep cleaning of classrooms, restrooms, floors, student housing units, residential common areas, offices, and common areas using hand tools, custodial equipment, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Unlock and lock doors, turn off lights, and secure campus buildings/rooms.
  • Stock and maintain inventory supplies, including operation of campus vehicles.
  • Identify, report, and take corrective action to resolve maintenance problems.
  • Improve work methods, knowledge of equipment, supplies, and safety through participation in training sessions with supervisors.
  • Move furniture and equipment, arrange tables and chairs for special events.
  • Clean interior and exterior windows, including use of a tucker pole, scrubbers, squeegees, and other window‑cleaning equipment.
  • Empty garbage, recycling, and compost, supporting campus sustainability efforts.
  • Complete minor repairs to custodial equipment, changing bags, bulbs, belts, etc.
  • Follow recommended safety procedures and attend safety trainings.
  • Require punctual and regular attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Washington driver’s license and insurability.
  • Physical ability to perform essential functions, including lifting up to 50 pounds, standing/walking/stooping the majority of the shift, and ability to climb ladders.
  • Six months to one year experience in custodial or cleaning work.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a community college/higher education work environment.
  • Experience in multi‑housing, dormitory, or hotel hospitality/room service.
  • Develop innovative ideas that provide solutions to all types of workplace challenges.
  • Earn trust, respect, and confidence of coworkers and public through consistent honesty, forthrightness, and professionalism.
  • Actively contribute to a work environment that embraces diversity.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Accept personal responsibility for quality and timeliness of work.
  • Coordinate with building occupants to maintain operational needs and cleaning standards.
  • Recognize and identify maintenance issues and submit work orders for repair.
  • Certification by Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration.
  • Certification in floor care and commercial carpet maintenance tech.
  • CPR, First Aid training.
  • Willingness to learn and grow to meet needs of others.
Salary
  • Full‑time, classified, WFSE (Washington Federation of State Employees) represented position. Salary range $3,417.00/month starting at Step C, with periodic increments to $4,216.00/month.
  • Potential $2.50/hour shift premium if majority of time worked daily or weekly is between 5:00 pm and 7:00 am.
  • Forty hours is a standard full‑time work week.
Shift and Working Conditions
  • Schedule:

    40 hours per week, 5 consecutive days, typically assigned a set 4:00 pm to 12:30 pm, Monday‑Friday shift (subject to change).
  • Work performed indoors; HVAC systems may be shut down during working hours.
  • Outside movement in exposed weather, snow removal, and ice‑melting substance placement.
  • Summer hours may be adjusted to meet institutional needs.
