Summary

The Chief Engineer oversees and coordinates daily operations of the engineering/maintenance departments to ensure total comfort, safety, and satisfaction of hotel guests and staff; maintains all equipment, buildings, and property in proper condition.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead the team to ensure all team members are properly trained, deployed and held accountable.
  • Maintain property including but not limited to guest rooms, public areas, and equipment through development and implementation of preventive maintenance program; ensure all maintenance and repairs are completed in a timely, cost-effective manner and according to all specifications.
  • Manage hotel’s physical operations including but not limited to refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, laundry machines, swimming pools, kitchen equipment, emergency generators, plumbing, water treatment, and electric systems.
  • Interface with appropriate hotel staff/managers to receive information regarding maintenance needs; ensure timely response to requests.
  • Interface with appropriate hotel staff/managers, engineers, and outside contractors to review and/or develop renovation and new construction plans; coordinate communication with and work of outside contractors.
  • Monitor and maintain proper inventory levels; authorize purchase orders for supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure all fire and safety inspections are completed and any discrepancies corrected; ensure property is in compliance with all safety and sanitation policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Supervise and assist staff in maintenance and repair of equipment, buildings, and property as needed.
  • Possess and maintain thorough knowledge of city and state building codes, OSHA requirements, and ADA laws; implement OSHA and ADA guidelines and programs.
  • Possess and maintain thorough knowledge of ventilation/air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and other generally accepted maintenance skills.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor department budget; manage expenses within approved budget constraints.
  • Prepare accurate and timely reports as required.
  • Hire, train, supervise, motivate, and develop maintenance/engineering staff; manage schedules and workflow.
  • Assign duties and monitor quality of work; assure staff conforms to organizational policies and procedures and safety regulations.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and oversight of subordinates; actively work to promote and recognize performance.
  • Keep up to date on overall activities of the team, identifying problem areas and taking corrective actions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Directly supervise employees within the maintenance department.
  • Indirectly supervise employees within the housekeeping and laundry departments.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
