Whatcom Land Trust is a nationally accredited non‑profit organization with the mission to preserve and protect wildlife habitat, scenic, agricultural, and open space lands in Whatcom County for future generations by securing interests in land and promoting land stewardship. Since 1984, the Land Trust has protected over 28,000 acres.

Whatcom Land Trust is hiring three Seasonal Stewardship Technicians in 2026 to primarily support stewardship of Whatcom Land Trust (WLT) managed properties by completing land management activities including boundary line marking, habitat maintenance and restoration, invasive species removal, thinning of young forest stands, trail creation and/or maintenance, and signage installation. Additional opportunities may be available to assist with completing monitoring visits and drafting management plans.

Currently, WLT manages just over 8,300 acres and has protected an additional 10,000 acres through approximately 110 Conservation Easements.

• Complete invasive plant species removal projects, including hand pulling, digging with small hand tools, and mechanical removal with powered hand tools (e.g. brush cutters, chainsaws). Herbicide application will not be a part of this position.
• Complete additional habitat restoration activities, including planting of native species, clearing competing vegetation around young plantings, removal of fences that pose as wildlife barriers, and forest thinning of young dense forest stands.
• Complete human access projects, including trail maintenance, trail creation, trail closure, gate installation, fence installation, and signage installation.
• Complete general land management activities, including boundary line marking, monitoring lands for use, and cleaning up debris (e.g. litter, dumped garbage, campfire dispersal).
• Safely use and maintain hand and power tools, including small hand tools, large hand tools, brush cutters, chainsaws, and augers.
• Collect GPS data in the field, and data entry into a computer.
• Depending on interest, additional learning opportunities are available, including assisting with monitoring reports, developing management plans, managing databases, and assisting with volunteer events.
• Other duties as assigned.

• At least one year of work experience, or an associate’s degree, or combination of education and work experience to successfully perform duties of the job as stated above.
• Ability to walk up to six miles in a single day over rough terrain and navigate in remote areas year‑round in all weather conditions. Occasionally will need to carry at least 40 lbs.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions 40 hours per week for 6 months.
• Ability to safely operate and maintain hand and power tools, including brush cutters, chainsaws, and various hand tools, or the strong willingness and ability to learn.
• Knowledge of habitat restoration techniques, land management techniques, and trail management techniques, or a strong willingness and ability to learn.
