- Team:
Part of a 14-commissioned officer department serving a campus population of 14,747 students and 3,660 faculty/staff. - Mission:
To act upon law-enforcement matters and perform police functions to protect the campus community and enforce laws and regulations.
- Law Enforcement:
Act upon law-enforcement matters and enforce campus regulations, local, state, and federal laws with full arrest powers as a commissioned law officer. - Campus Patrol:
Patrol and protect the 220-acre Bellingham main campus community, serving a population of over 14,000 students and 3,600 faculty/staff, 24 hours a day. - Community Engagement:
Practice positive community and coworker engagement, fostering a culture of care and open accountability within a diverse university environment. - Professional Growth:
Engage in opportunities to work in specialty positions such as SWAT, Special Events Team, Evidence Room, Field Training Officer, or become an instructor in areas like Firearms, Patrol Tactics, Taser, Defensive Tactics, and EVOC. - Service Excellence:
Demonstrate excellence in emotional intelligence, positive morale, continuous quality improvement, and friendly customer service while interacting with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Background:
Must be 21 years of age, legally allowed to work in the US, and have no record of felony convictions. For entry-level applicants, completion of the Public Safety Testing process for WWUPD is required. - Experience:
A valid driver’s license is required. Lateral Police Officer applicants must have experience as a fully commissioned law enforcement officer in WA State or the ability to obtain a WA State Commission through the Washington State Equivalency Academy upon hire. All officers must successfully complete the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission’s Basic Law Enforcement Training Program or meet equivalency requirements. - Skills:
Ability to pass physical ability tests prior to hire and throughout the Basic Law Enforcement Academy. Demonstrated excellence in emotional intelligence, positive morale, continuous quality improvement, and friendly customer service. Ability to operationalize sustainability concepts (economic, societal, environmental) into job duties. Ability to pass an extensive background investigation, polygraph test, psychological evaluation, and medical physical evaluation. - Bonus:
An accredited Associate’s degree or 90 undergraduate credit hours, or equivalent education/experience. Previous positive working relationships with diverse community members, including young adults (18-24 years old), people of color, LGBTQ people, and others from marginalized groups.
