Overview
The Division of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) is hiring a Tower Crane Safety Compliance Investigator (CISHI‑3) to conduct technical inspections, investigations, and enforcement actions related to tower crane safety across Washington State. The role requires independent, high‑level investigative work and will support accident prevention, compliance inspections, and public safety.
Responsibilities- Conduct complex safety inspections and investigations involving tower cranes, mobile cranes, rigging operations, and other construction hazards.
- Review tower crane permit compliance and ensure employers meet all operational and safety requirements.
- Enter active construction worksites unannounced to conduct inspections and compliance investigations.
- Gather and preserve evidence through interviews, photographs, video, field notes, and document review.
- Determine root causes and contributing factors of accidents and workplace hazards.
- Write highly detailed technical reports that support citations, penalties, and legal proceedings.
- Present findings during opening and closing conferences with employers and employee representatives.
- Collaborate with engineers, attorneys, prosecutors, safety professionals, and other compliance investigators.
- Testify as a primary witness in formal and informal appeal hearings.
- Ensure employers complete required hazard abatement actions.
- Maintain accurate records and evidence for ongoing investigations and future reference.
- Valid and unrestricted driver’s license.
- Ability to learn, grow, and meet the needs of others.
- Certified crane operator with at least 7 years of experience operating and inspecting cranes, including at least 2 years of tower crane experience.
- Certified crane inspector with at least 7 years of experience, accredited by one of the following:
Crane Certification Association of America, North American Crane Bureau (NACB), Cal‑OSHA, National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators, or Washington State; primary certifier for at least 5 tower cranes. - Qualified crane mechanic or crane technician with at least 7 years of experience working with and inspecting cranes, including at least 2 years of tower crane experience.
- Bilingual individuals; a 5% salary increase applies for dual‑language responsibilities.
