Position: Interim Grade 8 Math Teacher (Leave Replacement)

Overview

Interim Grade 8 Math Teacher (Leave Replacement) – Belmont Day School seeks a dynamic, skilled, and creative math teacher to teach Algebra 1 to Grade 8 students, serve as an advisor, and collaborate with a collegial, skilled team of faculty. This temporary exempt position is not benefits-eligible except for health insurance, which will be offered after 90 days of employment. This position reports to the middle school head beginning August 27, 2026, and ending on Friday, December 18, 2026.

This position is not eligible for employer-sponsored relocation.

Salary and Benefits

Salary range: $69,438 to $99,785 for twenty years of prior teaching experience, based on the minimum years of experience required for this role. Because this is a temporary role, the annualized salary, based on years of experience, will be prorated for the partial-year commitment. Details posted: 16-Jun-26.

Responsibilities
  • Teach three sections of grade 8 math: two sections of advanced Algebra 1 and one section of standard Algebra 1 with different curricula.
  • Serve as an eighth grade advisor.
  • Follow and implement the current grade 8 math curriculum, including rigorous, effective, and compelling curricular experiences.
  • Work to ensure academic excellence by helping students approach novel tasks with confidence and necessary skills.
  • Collaborate with teams of colleagues to support co-curricular programming and the development of adolescents beyond the classroom.
  • Run a middle school club.
  • Serve in one or more roles:
    Capstone mentor, middle school athletics coach, Growth, Development, and Belonging teacher, and/or associate teacher mentor.
  • Keep careful anecdotal and assessment records to write comprehensive student reports.
  • Lead and assist in parent-teacher conferences focused on social, emotional, and academic growth of middle school students.
  • Provide regular, constructive, and specific feedback to students to encourage their growth as mathematicians.
  • Establish and maintain strong home-school partnerships with families to ensure students’ success.
  • Commit to fostering an equitable and inclusive community in and outside of the classroom.
  • Engage with students routinely by providing coverage at lunch, recess, dismissal, or other duties as needed.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience teaching this developmental age group.
  • Experience teaching math.
  • Experience with problem-based curriculum (e.g., Illustrative Math or Open Up Resources), including Algebra 1.
  • Outstanding organizational skills.
  • Strong commitment to building a cohesive and innovative community of learners.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to develop thematic curriculum, appropriate pacing, and scope and sequence of curriculum to meet student needs.
  • Commitment to professional development and best practices in teaching.
  • Clear understanding and dedication to equity and inclusion, with anti-bias and culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • Commitment to effective use of technology in the classroom.
  • Flexibility, energy, humor, and creativity.
