Job DescriptionAbout Us: LABBB Collaborative provides educational programming and support services for over 300 special needs students from more than 65 districts. We serve students ages 3 to 22 with a variety of special needs, including autism spectrum disorder, multi‑handicaps, pervasive developmental disorders, developmental delays, language deficits, and social/emotional challenges. About the role: LABBB is hiring a LPN / Special Education Teacher Assistant to work with students with significant disabilities, including intellectual, communication, and behavior challenges. The classroom is a multi‑grade substantially separate classroom located at Chenery Upper Elementary School. The LPN/TA provides primary and emergency health care to students, including nursing services during transportation (e.g., community trips/field trips). When not providing nursing care, the LPN/TA fulfills a teaching assistant role, supporting students in a substantially separate classroom, a general education inclusion setting, or the community, and assisting special education teachers and specialists throughout each school day.
This position is responsible for data collection, developing therapeutic rapport to de‑escalate situations, and providing effective instruction. Teaching Assistants engage in professional development and follow all recommendations from the students’ teams. The role requires a positive, caring attitude and flexibility to meet school needs.
- Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of Massachusetts.
- High School Diploma or GED required;
Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred. - Current first aid/CPR certification.
- Experience working with children, young adults, or in human services; special education experience highly desirable.
- Ability to work with students with a variety of disabilities, including social‑emotional, behavioral, non‑verbal, non‑ambulatory, etc.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to commute between buildings/programs during the day.
- Willingness to drive LABBB van as required.
- Full‑time (35 hours per week), 11 months (school calendar plus 4 weeks of summer).
- Attend to students' personal hygiene and health care needs per individual health care plans or classroom schedule, including feeding, medication administration, diaper changes, bathroom accompaniment, seizure monitoring, oxygen administration, and suctioning.
- Properly lift, transfer, and position students as needed.
- Monitor physical condition and communicate changes to the school nurse, lead nurse, or supervisor.
- Maintain communication with all relevant staff and parents as directed.
- Track classroom records, medication charts, student activity, and behavior observations.
- Monitor all medical equipment, such as oxygen and suction devices.
- Assess and respond to emergency situations.
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe environment using universal precautions and blood‑borne pathogen guidelines.
- Assist with student arrival and departure.
- Support the implementation of data‑driven instruction, individualized education plans, and behavior intervention plans under licensed staff supervision.
- Create an organized, respectful, and stimulating classroom environment tailored to student needs and interests.
- Follow assigned schedules and reassign to different program locations as needed.
- Prepare instructional materials as directed by the teacher.
- Collect student data and share it with the student’s team.
- Utilize adaptive equipment for individual students effectively.
