Sr. Director, Institute of Coaching
The Institute of Coaching (IOC) is a professional association committed to advancing the science and practice of coaching. Based at McLean Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School and member of Mass General Brigham, the Institute is supported operationally by Parthenon Management Group (PMG). IOC bridges scientific research and coaching practice through research-informed education, professional development, scholarly publications, research grants, and a global membership community.
Role:
Sr. Director
Purpose of the Role
The Sr. Director serves as IOC's senior leader, accountable for the vision, quality, and coherence of all educational programming. The Sr. Director ensures that IOC's offerings reflect professional best practices, integrate scientific insight, and advance IOC's mission and reputation. In collaboration with PMG's Association Manager, the Sr. Director's leadership helps guide and inform the operations including education and programming, membership, sponsorship, marketing, finance, development, and volunteer engagement.
Governance & Leadership Participation:
- Participates as a member of the Institute Leadership Council (ILC), contributing to long-range strategy, institutional alignment, and reputational leadership
- Chairs the Coaching Leaders Group (CLG) and is accountable for its effectiveness and outcomes
- Participates as a member of the Operations Leaders Group (OLG) to ensure alignment between educational priorities, operational feasibility, and execution
- Serves in a consulting capacity to scientific or advisory bodies as appropriate
Key Responsibilities:
- Sets educational vision, strategy, and quality standards for IOC
- Serves as final decision authority for educational content approval
- Chairs and leads the Coaching Leaders Group (CLG)
- Guides and supports volunteer educators and content leaders
- Ensures alignment between educational programs and IOC's long-range strategy
- Collaborates closely with the Association Manager to guide and inform operations supporting the Institute
- Collaborates closely with the Director of Research to integrate science into education
- Serves as the primary academic liaison to other governance bodies and PMG
- Serves as a visible external leader and ambassador for IOC's educational mission
- Supports sponsor engagement, partnerships, and external relationships in collaboration with PMG and IOC leadership
- Participates in fundraising efforts for the Institute, coordinated through the MGB Development department
- Contributes to budget planning and fiscal stewardship related to educational programming, in coordination with PMG and the OLG
- Participates in conference planning activities
Qualifications:
Decision Authority and Accountability:
• Final approval of educational content and programming
• Educational standards and instructional quality
• Operational oversight to ensure alignment with the IOC's mission, strategic priorities, and institutional standards
Time Commitment:
• Monthly one-hour CLG meetings (Chair)
• Quarterly ILC meetings (90–120 minutes)
• Regular OLG participation (as scheduled)
• Routine coordination with the Director of Research, PMG, and volunteer leaders
• Regular ongoing engagement with sponsors, professional fellows, IOC members, and coaching thought leaders
• Governance participation and time commitments may vary slightly based on strategic priorities and annual planning cycles
• Ongoing engagement with the Director of Research for philanthropic efforts, funders, and other potential sources of research support
Eligibility Requirements:
Coaching experience qualifications:
• Doctoral degree in a discipline within the scope of the coaching field such as psychology, social psychology, or psychotherapy, or healthcare, or organizational behavior
• Proof of active coaching certification through specific certifying bodies OR at least ten years experience in coaching practice, coach training and/or coach mentoring
Faculty eligibility:
