Job Description & How to Apply Below
Belmont Abbey College invites applications for a two-year position as a Visiting Assistant Professor of History, with a start for August 2026.
Job Responsibilities
The teaching load is 4/4. Classes are scheduled both during the daytime and in the evenings. Furthermore, courses will use different teaching modalities, including in-person, hybrid, and fully online formats. Accordingly, experience with Canvas and online education is highly valued. Service to the department, the College, the broader community, scholarly development, and contributing positively to the College's mission are all expected.
Qualifications
We seek candidates with expertise in U.S. history, with possible subfields in U.S History before 1865, public history, and in global history (particularly regions such as the Middle East, East Asia, and Latin America).
Candidates will be expected to teach the two Western Civilization survey courses that are part of our institution's Core Curriculum, as well as the two U.S. History survey courses that are requirements for the History major. Candidates will also have an opportunity to offer upper-level courses in the History Department that fit with their areas of expertise. The College is interested in an excellent teacher who is passionate about undergraduate education and who feels a calling to be part of a small, Catholic, and Benedictine liberal arts institution.
A Ph.D. in History or a related field by the time of the appointment is highly desired, but outstanding ABD candidates will also be considered.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
The successful candidate will be a talented and dedicated academic who is deeply and enthusiastically committed to the Catholic mission of Belmont Abbey College. Preference will be given to those candidates who can demonstrate
1) a record of excellence in undergraduate teaching and a sense of teaching as a vocation;
2) a philosophy of teaching that supports the approach to education expressed in St. John Paul II's Ex Corde Ecclesiae; and
3) a strong desire to teach at a liberal arts institution where the academic program is "guided by the Catholic intellectual tradition and the Benedictine spirit of prayer and learning."
