Special Education Teacher, Special Needs / Learning Disabilities
The Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities to help them achieve academic success, independence, and social-emotional growth . The teacher develops and implements individualized programs and works collaboratively with staff and families to meet each student’s unique needs.
Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
Provide direct instruction tailored to students with disabilities in various settings (resource room, self-contained classroom, or inclusion setting)
Adapt and modify curriculum, lessons, and assessments to meet diverse learning needs
Support students in developing:
Academic skills
Social and behavioral skills
Functional life skills
Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals
Conduct or contribute to student evaluations and reevaluations
Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and positive behavior supports
Collaborate with:
General education teachers
Paraprofessionals and aides
School psychologists
Speech, occupational, and physical therapists
Parents/guardians
Maintain compliance with IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and state regulations
Participate in IEP meetings, staff meetings, and professional development
Manage classroom behavior and maintain a safe, structured learning environment
Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field
Valid Wisconsin Special Education teaching license (or eligibility)
Knowledge of special education laws, IEP development, and instructional strategies
Ability to work with diverse student populations with varying disabilities
Experience teaching in a special education or inclusive classroom setting
Strong classroom management and behavior support skills
Experience with assistive technology and differentiated instruction
Strong collaboration and communication abilities
School-based environment (classrooms, resource rooms, and specialized programs)
Work with students across various grade levels and ability levels
Requires standing, walking, and active engagement throughout the school day
May supervise paraprofessionals or aides
Possible assignment across multiple classrooms or schools
Strong instructional and differentiation skills
Knowledge of IEPs and special education processes
Classroom and behavior management
Communication and teamwork
Organization and time management
Patience, empathy, and adaptability
