Overview

The Design Engineer is responsible for engineering work involving complex design concepts and calculations related to pressure vessels and corresponding structural components. This role develops 3D solid models, detailed drawings, and technical specifications for the manufacture of cargo tank motor vehicles serving the bulk liquid transportation industry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Applies engineering methods to develop products while ensuring quality, regulatory, and profitability requirements
  • Assists and troubleshoots issues and/or questions with production staff related to fabrication of components and assemblies
  • Calculates material usage for all components and parts for assemblies
  • Collaborates with designers on improvements to product lines
  • Completes updates or changes to released engineering documents via Engineering Change Notice (ECN) procedures
  • Computes mathematical formulas to develop and design detailed specifications for components and/or machinery using computer-assisted equipment
  • Confers with senior engineering to review schematics and address questions related to system installation
  • Coordinates and consults with cross-functional teams to design, layout, detail components and systems, and resolve design issues
  • Creates and enters part numbers, bills of material, and shop floor routings into the ERP system
  • Creates models, prints, schematics, and bills of material to support production
  • Designs, calculates, and drafts pressure vessels and corresponding structural components using CAD and FEA software
  • Develops 3D models and detailed drawings for components, assemblies, and hardware based on specifications from sales
  • Develops drawings and specifications in compliance with all applicable regulations and standards
  • Evaluates change requests with respect to cost, weight, manufacturability, quality, and customer impact
  • Maintains flexibility to shift tasks based on business and manufacturing needs
  • Lays out, draws, and details schematics, parts, and assemblies with all required views and information to depict functional relationships
  • Modifies and revises designs to correct operating deficiencies or reduce production issues
  • Notifies supervisor of any quality concerns or delays
  • Adds instructions and comments to drawings, reference manuals, and technical publications to describe operation and maintenance of mechanical systems
  • Reviews and analyzes specifications, sketches, drawings, and related data to assess design impacts and required procedures
  • Reviews drawings, bills of material, and routings to verify accuracy
  • Adjusts priorities based on manufacturing needs
  • Suggests or collaborates on design improvements or alternative methods to improve efficiency and accuracy
  • Verifies accuracy of engineering information for manufacturing
  • Works within deadlines to ensure timely delivery
  • Problem-solves and communicates effectively with the team
  • Contributes ideas for continuous improvement of workflows and processes
  • Follows all safety guidelines and procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements

  • Level One
    Associate’s degree in mechanical design or a related field
  • High proficiency with Autodesk products (AutoCAD Mechanical, Inventor, Vault)
  • Design experience with sheet metal, weldments, and large assemblies
  • Experience working with ERP systems
  • Level Two
    Meets Level One requirements
  • 2–3 years of design experience with trailer or vehicle systems
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations and standards (49 CFR 178 & 571, FDA, ASME BPVC Section VIII-1, 3-A, ASTM)
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes
  • Ability to perform and interpret engineering calculations
  • Level Three
    Meets Level Two requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical design or a related field
  • 4+ years of design experience with trailer or vehicle systems
  • Develops design validations compliant with all applicable regulations and standards
  • Develops calculations and processes ensuring regulatory compliance
  • Acts as a design-certifying engineer
  • Level Four
    Meets Level Three requirements
  • Holds a Professional Engineer (PE) license valid in Wisconsin
