Beloit Memorial Hospital is hiring a Surgical First Assistant for our Surgical Services Department.
Job Details- Sign-On Bonus: Yes

- Schedule: 7a-5:30p, call is required
- Hours per week: 40 hours per week

The Certified Surgical First Assistant will be primarily responsible for assisting in surgery by providing exposure, traction, and other technical functions under the direct supervision of the surgeon. Available in all general, urological, ENT, OB/GYN, podiatry, orthopedic, plastic, vascular, or other surgical cases as required. Involved in both outpatient and inpatient at BHS in accordance with recognized standards of care as outlined by federal, state, and local applicable laws and regulations.
The Certified Surgical First Assistant will comply with the ethical and administrative rules, regulations, policies, and procedures and will participate with BHS Quality Assurance Program in order to comply with TJC and Medicare standards.
- Assist in surgery by providing exposure, traction, and other technical functions under the direct supervision of the surgeon. Maintain knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to assigned procedures.
- Ensure that all required supplies, equipment, and instruments are available for all assigned procedures.
- Participate in room set up, pre-procedure preparation, intra-operative positioning, prepping, draping, and room turnover independently.
- Maintain control, react calmly, efficiently and professionally in emergency situations.
- Respond to emergency or unusual situations as required.
- Demonstrate essential mental discipline, attention to detail, thoroughness, stamina, and concentration during the surgical procedure.
- Prioritize work responsibilities appropriately. Proactively assist others with minimal supervision including non-patient care activities (case pulling, maintaining procedure supplies, and environment of care).
- Adhere to all hospital and departmental safety initiatives.
- Promote a safe environment and report unsafe environmental and quality concerns to immediate supervisor.
- May require working irregular hours.
- Graduate of Surgical Assistant program or comparable program.
- Surgical Assistant Certification is preferred, required to become Certified Surgical Assistant within 2 years.
- Prior experience as Surgical Tech and Surgical Assistant.
- CPR certification within 3 months of hire.
- Call is required.
- Adheres to all established hospital and nursing department policies, rules, and regulations.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills, verbal and written skills to communicate with staff and public. Uses skills to understand and follow directions.
- Ability to perform simple math addition and subtraction, as well as read and understand written material.
- Ability to see and hear at a sufficient level to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to speak clearly and distinctly and to interact positively with patients, peers, and the public.
- Ability to carry 15-30 pounds.
- Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions.
- Physical effort includes walking, standing, stair climbing, bending and stooping, lifting.
