JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Medical Director (RN) serves as the operational clinical leader for nursing and clinical support services within the outpatient health center. Working in partnership with the Medical Director, this role ensures safe, efficient, and high-quality day-to-day clinical operations.

The position provides direct supervision and operational oversight of nursing and clinical support staff, manages clinic flow and staffing coordination, and ensures consistent execution of clinical workflows, quality initiatives, and regulatory requirements consistent with Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) standards.

This role bridges medical leadership and clinic operations to ensure care delivery is efficient, compliant, and patient-centered.

SUPERVISORY STRUCTURE

Directly Supervises:

Registered Nurses (RNs)

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)

Medical Assistants (MAs)

Clinical Support Staff as assigned

Day-to-Day Supervisory

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assigning and coordinating daily clinical staffing
  • Managing nursing workflows and delegation of clinical tasks
  • Monitoring staff performance and productivity
  • Addressing operational issues impacting patient care
  • Providing real-time coaching and clinical guidance
  • Managing call-offs, coverage adjustments, and workflow redistribution
  • Escalating clinical or operational concerns to the Medical Director as appropriate
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Clinical Operations & Clinic Flow

Oversee daily clinical operations to ensure efficient patient flow and access to care

Coordinate nursing and clinical support staffing schedules to meet patient volume demands

Monitor rooming processes, triage workflows, and clinical throughput

Identify operational barriers and implement workflow improvements

Ensure providers are supported with appropriate clinical staffing and resources

Serve as the primary operational contact for nursing-related clinic issues

Collaborate with front desk and operations staff to align scheduling and clinical capacity

Provide direct supervision and accountability for nursing and clinical support staff

Establish clear expectations for clinical performance, workflows, and patient care standards

Conduct hiring interviews, onboarding, competency validation, and performance evaluations

Provide coaching, corrective action, and progressive discipline in collaboration with HR

Monitor staff competencies, scope-of-practice adherence, and clinical documentation standards

Lead regular nursing staff meetings and operational huddles

Clinical Workflow & Care Delivery

Standardize nursing workflows across providers and clinic locations (if applicable)

Ensure consistent execution of:

Triage protocols

Standing orders

Medication administration processes

Care management workflows

Support implementation of team-based care models

Assist with escalation of complex patient care concerns

Quality Improvement & Follow-Through

Partner with Quality and Medical Leadership to operationalize QAPI initiatives

Translate quality goals into actionable nursing workflows

Monitor staff follow-through on clinical quality measures including:

Chronic disease management protocols

Address gaps in documentation, workflow compliance, or care delivery affecting quality outcomes

Participate in chart reviews, workflow audits, and performance improvement initiatives

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management

Ensure nursing practices comply with:

HRSA/FQHC program requirements

CMS Conditions of Participation

Wisconsin scope-of-practice regulations

Organizational policies and clinical protocols

Maintain clinic readiness for HRSA Operational Site Visits, audits, and accreditation reviews

Reinforce infection control, safety, and risk management practices

Collaborate with leadership on incident review and corrective action planning

Policy, Protocol & Operational Development

Assist the Medical Director with development and maintenance of clinical policies, standing orders, and nursing protocols

Ensure policies are operationally feasible and consistently implemented
