Job Summary
This posting is for a Gas Technician (Welding) apprentice location in Beloit, WI. The role may be filled at the Apprentice or Journey level depending on qualifications. The position involves large tapping projects, assisting tool crib with gas tools and tool repair, with approximately 60‑70% of duties focused on large flange tapping. The role includes maintaining and installing gas underground distribution systems and installing electric underground cable.
Emergency response, on‑call, and travel requirements apply. Experience in welding is highly preferred. Candidates must reside or relocate within 25 minutes of Beloit headquarters.
- Maintain and install gas underground distribution systems.
- Install electric underground cable, pedestal stakes, and ground rods when performed concurrently with gas.
- Install gas mains and gas services, including regulators, relief valves, and meters.
- Set hydrants and valves; locate and repair leaks; read gas meters; tap mains and make connections.
- Train employees in lower classifications for short periods on simple projects such as installing services.
- Maintain and use gas and electric related equipment, including lead, line and other trucks, digging, boring, lifting, drilling, and locating equipment.
- Assist in emergency restoration, construction, maintenance, or meter exchanges, including incidental customer servicing work: appliance inspections, pilot relighting, customer pipe and equipment, leak detection, meter exchanges, etc.
- Assist Service Department workload in performing periodic gas meter exchanges.
- Locate gas and electric underground utility facilities; inspect contractor work as assigned.
- Perform necessary clerical work as assigned.
- Exercise good customer relations skills; keep customers informed of work being performed.
- Perform pipe joining; conduct work according to established company procedures and safety practices.
- Perform other duties similar to or incidental to this position.
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience RequirementsCompletion of the gas technician apprenticeship and passing the final position qualification examination.
Other Requirements- Hold a valid driver’s license.
- Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License prior to the end of the trial period.
- Subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements under 49 CFR Part 40, FMCSA (Part 382), and PHMSA (Part 199) regulations.
- Proven skill with digging tools and other modern street equipment and piping.
- Ability to weld (preferred).
- Demonstrated ability to lead and teach others.
- Neat appearance.
- Ability to perform the physical duties of the position.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Pay Range$42.11 – $51.35 per hour.
