Position:
District-Wide Special Education Spanish Interpreter/Translator
Reports to:
Director of Special Education
Qualifications:
- Certification of an ISBE-qualified interpreter/translator
- High school diploma or equivalent. (Associate's degree or higher, preferred)
- Fluency in spoken and written English and Spanish
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to interpret and translate accurately and objectively
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
- Experience in interpretation, translation, education, or special education settings
- Knowledge of special education, specialized terminology, and procedures
- Understanding of IDEA, Section 504, FERPA, and language access requirements
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with students, families, and staff
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
- Valid Illinois Driver's License
- Successful completion of background checks and fingerprint clearance as required by Illinois law
- Hold a recognized interpreter certification or complete a certification/training program that includes language proficiency testing, interpreter ethics, confidentiality, professionalism, cultural competency, and interpretation practices
Terms of Employment: ESP Employee Group - Eleven (11) Months. An extended contract term will be available if needed and approved by the supervisor.
Basic Function:
The Interpreter/Translator provides oral interpretation and written translation services to facilitate communication between the school district and multilingual families. This position supports special education, multilingual programs, student services, and district operations by ensuring families have meaningful access to information and services in compliance with federal and Illinois state regulations. The position requires for the interpreter/translator to be a qualified interpreter per ISBE criteria ensuring the competence of interpretation between English and Spanish, knowledge of specialized terminology and training in the ethics of interpretation.

Key Performance Responsibilities:
- Provide accurate and impartial interpretation during:
Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, evaluation meetings, and manifestation determination meetings - Section 504 meetings
- Parent-teacher conferences
- Enrollment and registration meetings
- Student discipline meetings
- District and school events
- Translate written materials, including: IEPs and evaluation reports if official translation is requested
- Parent notices and consent forms
- Progress reports and student records
- District correspondence, newsletters, and website content
- Assist district personnel with communication related to special education services, multilingual programs, assessments, and student support services.
- Review and proofread translated materials for accuracy, grammar, and cultural appropriateness.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and family information in accordance with FERPA, IDEA, and district policies.
- Maintain records of interpretation and translation services.
- Participate in professional development and perform other duties as assigned.
- Maintain any ISBE requirements pertaining to the qualified interpreter/translator certification
