Job Overview

Bemidji State University (BSU) seeks a TRIO Upward Bound Academic Advisor for a fixed‑term, full‑time position (Range

C) to support a federally funded program that assists first‑generation, low‑income high‑school students in preparing for post‑secondary education.

• Assist in the development and implementation of TRIO Upward Bound services in accordance with federal regulations and university policy (≈60% of duties).
• Plan, implement, and evaluate program services, including summer research assistants and BSU student tutor/mentor activities.
• Provide oversight for the SSS mentoring program and evaluation of its student mentors.
• Understand and apply US Department of Education operating policies, cost guidelines, and grant regulations.
• Help set and adjust program goals, objectives, services, activities, and policies aligned with participant needs and funding requirements.
• Coordinate workshops and other program activities such as orientation, travel, and special events.
• Identify and recruit eligible students, monitor academic progress, and provide counseling and interventions as needed.
• Maintain program documentation, data collection, and reporting to the Department of Education.
• Manage travel plans for participants to TRIO conferences and post‑secondary institutions, including expense reconciliation.
• Support summer program planning, staff supervision, and formative assessment of staff performance.
• Create recruitment videos, newsletters, and social media content for the program.
• Update alumni and participant data, support website management, and produce yearbook materials.

• Master’s degree with 1 year of professional experience in higher education administration, student development, counseling, social work, or a STEM‑related field;
• or Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of professional experience;
• or 3 years of experience qualifying as a combination of education and professional experience.
• Demonstrated ability to work with federal TRIO programs or similar student support initiatives.
• Strong oral and written communication skills and experience delivering training or workshops.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti‑racism.

• Master’s degree and 1 year of experience in an accredited higher education institution.
• Knowledge of federal grant regulations, including OMB circulars and EDGAR.
• Experience advising first‑generation college students on scholarship, financial aid, academics, and career pathways.
• Experience with developmental workshops such as study skills and time management.
• Experience managing tutoring, mentoring, or staff for secondary‑level students.
• Ability to collaborate with faculty across disciplines.
