The Manual Machinist is a skilled, hands-on role focused on the precise machining and fabrication of aircraft components using manual machine tools. This position plays a critical role in supporting the Repair Station, Component Shop, and Restoration Shop by producing high-quality, tight-tolerance parts essential for historic aircraft restoration, repair, and fabrication projects. Reporting to the Component Manager, the Manual Machinist will operate a variety of manual equipment including lathes, mills, grinders, and press brakes.

The role demands strong mechanical aptitude, exceptional attention to detail, independence, and a commitment to quality craftsmanship while maintaining safety, shop organization, and continuous improvement.

Manual Machining & Fabrication

• Set up and operate manual lathes, vertical and horizontal mills, surface grinders, press brakes, and other shop equipment with precision and efficiency.
• Machine and fabricate complex parts and assemblies from various metals and materials to exact specifications and tight tolerances.
• Develop custom work-holding solutions and select appropriate cutting tools based on part geometry, material type, and required finishes.
• Accurately read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and manufacturing documentation.
• Use precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, indicators, etc.) to inspect in-process and finished parts.

Production & Quality

• Complete projects on time while meeting or exceeding quality standards and specifications.
• Transition efficiently between tasks while maintaining high productivity and minimizing downtime.
• Perform routine preventative maintenance on manual equipment and contribute to overall shop cleanliness and organization.

• Collaborate effectively within a high-performance team, maintaining a positive attitude and openness to feedback.
• Maintain a safe working environment by following safety protocols, using proper PPE, and proactively identifying hazards.
• Participate in on-the-job training to expand skills and versatility.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support shop and company objectives.

• Minimum 3 years of professional experience operating manual machine tools (lathes, mills, grinders, etc.).
• Strong proficiency in manual machining techniques and fabrication processes.
• Advanced ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and manufacturing paperwork.
• Highly skilled in the use of precision measuring tools and inspection methods.
• Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to read, write, and speak English clearly.
• Demonstrated problem-solving skills and sound decision-making ability.
• Manual dexterity, physical stamina, and visual acuity required for operating equipment and inspecting fine details.
• Capability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds and work in a shop environment.
• Prior experience with fixture fabrication or aircraft-related machining is preferred.
• Passion for aviation, historic aircraft restoration, precision manufacturing, or high-quality craftsmanship is highly desirable.
