ABOUT THE JOB:

The Senior Accounting Technician performs advanced technical accounting, payroll review, reconciliation, and financial reporting support for the department. This position is responsible for reviewing financial transactions for accuracy, reconciling reports and accounts, identifying discrepancies, supporting policy compliance, and assisting with the implementation of accounting and administrative procedures.

The position requires strong attention to detail, sound judgment, knowledge of governmental accounting practices, and the ability to interpret and apply County policies, internal controls, and applicable federal, state, and local requirements. The Senior Accounting Technician serves as a technical resource to staff and supports accurate, timely, and compliant financial operations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Reconcile financial reports, accounts, ledgers, payroll records, expenditure reports, revenue records, purchasing records, and other fiscal data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Review financial transactions for proper coding, documentation, authorization, budget alignment, and adherence to County policies and procedures.
  • Perform advanced technical accounting duties related to accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger activity, grants, purchasing, budgeting, cost tracking, and year-end close processes.
  • Research and resolve discrepancies in accounting records, payroll entries, invoices, purchase orders, deposits, journal entries, and related financial reports.
  • Review payroll records, timesheets, leave balances, pay codes, overtime, differentials, deductions, and payroll adjustments for accuracy and compliance with applicable policies, procedures, labor agreements, and employment rules.
  • Train, guide, and provide technical assistance to staff on accounting procedures, payroll review processes, transaction coding, documentation requirements, and financial system use.
What You Will Bring:

Knowledge of or experience with:

  • Governmental accounting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Financial reconciliation methods and internal control practices.
  • Payroll review processes, timekeeping practices, and wage and hour compliance concepts.
  • Accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, budgeting, and general ledger procedures.
  • Financial reporting, transaction coding, and recordkeeping requirements.
  • Policy review, procedure development, and implementation practices.
  • The principles of general ledger record keeping (i.e., double-entry bookkeeping, accrual principle, matching principle, materiality principle, and revenue recognition principle).
  • Financial and Municipal accounting practices.
  • Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, Sharepoint).
Skill in:
  • Reconciling complex financial records and identifying discrepancies.
  • Reviewing payroll records with a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Applying policies, procedures, and internal controls consistently.
  • Analyzing financial data and preparing accurate reports.
  • Using spreadsheets to organize, calculate, compare, and validate financial information.
  • Interpreting policies, contracts, procedures, and financial documents.
  • Communicating technical accounting and payroll information clearly.
  • Managing multiple deadlines and priorities with accuracy.
  • Maintaining organized records and supporting documentation.
  • Performing advanced technical accounting work independently and accurately.
  • Detecting errors, inconsistencies, missing documentation, and compliance concerns.
  • Researching problems, identifying causes, and recommending corrective action.
  • Working collaboratively with Finance, Payroll, HR, department leadership, and staff.
