The Business Advisor II is responsible for advising, training, and providing assistance to entrepreneurs and small business owners. The advisor will provide resources and support in the areas of business and strategic planning, financial analysis, sales and marketing, and operations. The advisor will also assist in identifying other sources of expertise in the community to assist business clients with their specific needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Work with SBDC administrative assistant to schedule advisory meetings with prospective business clients.
- Provide business advising and problem solving to area businesses:
- Meet with business owners and prospective business owners one-on-one.
- Listen to business owner’s specific problems and analyze the critical problems.
- Provide recommendations and actions to be taken.
- Create action plans, next steps and follow-up.
- Refer clients to other sources of expertise in the community.
- Facilitate referrals between clients and professional, technical, and government service providers.
- Record all client interactions in the OSBDCN database within one week of meetings.
- Attend monthly team staff meetings.
- Work with SBDC clients on detailed financial planning with the goal to complete and submit loan applications.
- Research new and available business tools and resources.
- Attend community events on behalf of the SBDC; including webinars for professional development.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of business issues and topics including finance/accounting, sales, marketing, operations and management.
- Ability to empathize with clients and quickly translate experience into practical advice.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to prioritize activities and projects.
- Skill and familiarity with computers, multi-line phones, and other standard office equipment
- Proficient keyboard skills and the use of MS software.
- Ability to match small business needs with available programs and resources.
- Ability to work with individuals of diverse economic, social and educational backgrounds.
- Available to occasionally travel around the district to meet with businesses on-site.
- Knowledge of basic office technology, computer software programs and the Internet.
General hours are Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm. Work is performed in an office environment, mostly sitting. Computer screen is used more than 50 percent of the time. The employee is regularly required use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations.
Physical movements involve guiding, feeding materials into proper position. Lifting objects vary daily, ranging up to 20lbs. All individuals are required to be able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Education:
bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or related field. - Experience:
ownership and/or operation of a small business. - Computer literacy: ability to effectively use email, Internet, word processing, and spreadsheets.
