St. Charles App – Cardiothoracic Surgery

Position Overview:

Cardiothoracic Surgery APP is responsible for providing medical, surgical, and postoperative management for Cardiothoracic Surgery patients referred to the clinic and within the hospital setting. Cardiothoracic surgery APP will work in collaboration with other medical specialties to assess and manages patients following established standards and practices.

Work schedule:

Full time Advanced Practice provider shall complete a minimum of 172 clinical shifts per year. This will be a blend of hospital rounding, surgical assisting and scheduled clinic visits including charting of patients and other necessary duties.

Call expectation: APP will participate in the cardiothoracic surgery APP call rotation, which is assigned based upon the schedule rotation. Call burden equal to 1:3. Cardiothoracic APP call is first line overnight support off site for patients admitted to the Cardiothoracic Surgery service, outpatient after hour's calls and urgent/emergent surgical assisting when activated within the facility's onsite response time.

Work location:

Physician's primary clinic work location is St. Charles Bend Hospital with clinic in the Bend Heart & Lung Center.

Essential Functions And Duties:

  • Examines, diagnoses, and provides a broad scope of cardiac and thoracic surgical treatments
  • Assists during cardiac surgery including coronary artery bypass grafting, aortic, mitral, tricuspid valve repair/or replacement, aortic aneurysm repair, as well as additional cardiac procedures as needed
  • Assists during thoracic surgery including but not limited to diagnostic and therapeutic thoracic procedures: lobectomy, wedge resection, decortication, as well as additional lung and thoracic surgical procedures as needed.
  • Performs patient examinations, obtains and records pertinent medical history, subjective, and objective findings.
  • Orders and reviews appropriate laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Utilize the STS risk calculators as a part of surgical assessment for patients and will be familiar with new studies, emerging technology and medications beneficial to the patients being treated.
  • Administers and prescribes medications in compliance with state law and practice guidelines.
  • Orders appropriate medical and surgical procedures in accordance with State law and practice guidelines.
  • Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatments.
  • Educates patients regarding health, illness prevention, and healing. Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
  • Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, documenting clearly and concisely.
  • Triages patient telephone calls, providing consultation as needed.
  • Communicates effectively with colleagues, patients, physicians, and administration.
  • Maintains quality of clinical practice by selecting appropriate avenues for professional growth.
  • May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.

Administrative Expectations:

  • Document all patient care within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and complete all necessary tasks in compliance with health system policies and regulatory agencies to ensure timely and accurate billing.
  • Be familiar with the SCHS organization structure.
  • Participate in SCMG physicians meetings and assist in policy formation for SCMG and Physician's practice.
  • Keep medical knowledge and skills current through regular CME activity. Must attest to having adequate (CME) to meet maintenance of board certification and compliance with MSO rules and continuing privileges without restriction.
  • Keep all licenses and appropriate certifications current and unrestricted.
  • Maintain active privileges rles Health System hospitals sufficient to permit performance of job duties.
