* DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

** St. Charles Health System GI Hospitalist providers address the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of hospitalized patients who have been referred from the community primary care doctors, emergency room doctors, or other physicians in the hospital for GI tract diagnosis.
*
* POSITION OVERVIEW:

** Gastroenterology is responsible for providing medical, surgical, and postoperative management of the GI tract. Gastroenterologists will work with providers in other specialties to provide patients specialized GI support. The GHI Hospitalist assesses and manages patients following established standards and practices.

Work schedule:

Shifts are generally 24 hours in duration with 10-12 hours in house and then on call back. Shifts will vary with 7 on 7 off or 14 on 14 off, with a maximum of 148 annual shifts.

Call expectation:
Night Back-up call is required.

Provider Practice

** ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
**** Role*
* ** Expectations:
*** Examines, diagnoses, and provides a broad scope of surgical treatments including endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasounds, colonoscopies, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, sigmoidoscopy, capsule endoscopy and double baloo enterostomy feeding tube insertion.
* May perform emergency procedures including endotracheal tube intubation, tube thoracotomy, pericardiocentesis, ultrasonographic evaluation, and peritoneal lavage.
* Performs patient examinations, obtains and records pertinent medical history, subjective, and objective findings.
* Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures.
* Interprets and integrates data to determine diagnosis, and therapeutic plan.
* Administers and prescribes medications in compliance with state law and practice guidelines.
* Orders and performs appropriate medical and surgical procedures in accordance with State law and practice guidelines.
* Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatments.
* Educates patients regarding health, illness prevention, and healing. Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
* Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, documenting clearly and concisely.
* Triages patient telephone calls, providing consultation as needed.
* Communicates effectively with colleagues, patients, physicians, and administration.
* Maintains quality of clinical practice by selecting appropriate avenues for professional growth.
* May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.

*** Documents all patient care within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes all necessary tasks in compliance with health system policies and regulatory agencies to ensure timely and accurate billing.
* Remains cognizant of SCHS organizational structures.
* Participates in provider meetings and assists in policy formation for SCHS and provider’s practice.
* Maintains current clinical knowledge and skills through regular CME activity. Attests to having adequate (CME) to meet maintenance of board certification and compliance with MSO rules and continuing privileges without restriction.
* Maintains current, unrestricted licensure and appropriate certifications to maintain privileges at a St. Charles Health System hospital sufficient to permit performance of job duties.
