Faculty Status This is a full-time tenure track faculty position represented by the Faculty Forum, not eligible for overtime. The assigned position is 9 months (179 days) per academic year.
Position SummaryThe Assistant Professor of Music provides instruction to students in Music, directs student discussion and evaluates student performance in the classroom, and serves as Conductor for the Central Oregon Symphony. In addition, this position develops curriculum, assesses student learning, and provides student advising.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide instruction in Music using approved course outcome guides. Teaching assignments may be during the day (including early morning), evening, or weekend, and could include classes taught at any of the College campuses, online or remotely.
- Provide student advising and assistance in areas of course selection, career planning, job placement and employment follow-up.
- Hold at least five office hours per week for student help sessions and program assistance.
- Utilize College tools and resources, including the Learning Management System and Student Accessibility Services software, to support teaching activities as appropriate.
- Participate in department meetings, curriculum revision, course assessment, program assessment, and program review.
- Engage in regular professional growth activities, remain current in the field, and maintain current credentials or licensures as required by the program.
- Participate in service to the college. This may include participating in College committees, taskforces, peer teams, or other activities.
- Provide meaningful, professional service to the community, businesses, public agencies, and other organizations.
- Perform other essential job functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
- Serve as Conductor for the Central Oregon Symphony (COS) in rehearsal and performance. The COS is a large symphonic ensemble (~60 players) including students and community musicians. The conductor is responsible for all aspects of symphony administration as it relates to the College and for repertoire and guest soloist selection. The COS is supported by the Central Oregon Symphony Association.
- Remainder of the load may include courses in music history, music theory, music technology, music fundamentals, private lessons, or another major ensemble.
- Provide leadership in the growth and advancement of the music program, focusing on increasing student enrollment and strengthening curriculum, program visibility, relevance, and long-term sustainability.
- Thorough knowledge in Music Theory, Music History, and Orchestral Conducting; ability to apply this knowledge.
- Ability to adapt and use a variety of teaching and assessment techniques, including technology.
- Ability to observe and oversee student safety in instructional spaces.
- Ability to teach diverse curricula to students with varying backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, course management systems, and technology used for instruction (online, hybrid, or traditional).
- Effective communication with diverse students, staff, and community members.
- Commitment to non-discriminatory service to students.
- Willingness to travel and teach at various hours and campus locations as required.
- Ability to foster collaboration and work as part of a faculty team.
- Strong oral, written, and electronic communication skills.
