Job Summary

The Oregon State University – Cascades seeks an Assistant Director of Creative Technologies and Scholarship. This full‑time professional faculty position is located in Bend, Oregon. The incumbent will cultivate an inclusive, cross‑disciplinary environment that serves students, faculty, and staff across all OSU‑Cascades programs. Responsibilities include teaching and training on creative technologies, building external partnerships, supporting research, and overseeing staff, facilities, and budget activities for creative and research support services.

Key Responsibilities 25% Supervision
  • Plan, assign, and evaluate work for classified and student staff.
  • Participate in hiring decisions, training plans, and staffing models.
  • Supervise all machining lab and maker space personnel, including 5‑7 student workers.
  • Ensure users receive appropriate equipment and safety training.
  • Support professional development emphasizing cross‑disciplinary service.
  • Adjust staffing in response to changing instructional, research, and service demands.
20% Facilities Management
  • Develop, implement, and update policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Maintain documentation and training standards across instructional, research, and open‑access use.
  • Oversee and maintain the machine shop, maker space, capstone design rooms, and teaching and research lab spaces.
  • Serve as primary liaison to university facilities.
  • Coordinate communications, including protocol documentation and web updates.
  • Direct integrated operation of multiple creative technology and research facilities.
20% Research Support
  • Support faculty in research design, fabrication planning, and prototyping workflows.
  • Provide structured support pathways for students conducting discipline‑based research.
  • Coordinate prioritization and scheduling of creative spaces.
  • Operate campus‑wide fabrication and prototyping research support services.
  • Collaborate with OSU‑Cascades research community.
  • Support high‑tech and low‑tech projects.
  • Facilitate inclusive research support opportunities.
20% Student Project Support
  • Consult and fabricate support for student projects across all programs.
  • Serve as a welcoming resource for non‑engineering students.
  • Implement structured student project support pathways.
10% External Partnerships, Visibility, Accountability
  • Develop and manage external partnerships to enhance instructional and research opportunities.
  • Represent OSU‑Cascades maker and fabrication capabilities to external stakeholders.
  • Establish partnership engagement standards.
  • Assess usage, outcomes, and effectiveness of services and refine operations.
  • Provide reports or recommendations to college leadership.
5% Budget Oversight
  • Develop and manage operational budgets for maker, fabrication, and research support activities.
  • Make operational decisions and recommendations related to budget priorities.
  • Manage and track budgets related to facilities, equipment, shop operations, and programmatic initiatives.
  • Exercise program‑level budget accountability aligned with priorities.
What You Will Need
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, manufacturing, industrial technology, applied sciences, creative technologies, or a closely related STEAM discipline; or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working in maker spaces, fabrication labs, or creative technology environments.
  • Track record of cross‑disciplinary engagement with varied fields.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience fostering inclusive learning and working environments.
