Job Definition

The Educational Assistant‑Child Development works in the Infant/Toddler Center at Bend High School and performs a wide variety of duties including assisting teen parents in child development and parenting, providing for the physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and developmental needs of the infants and toddlers, and supervising and evaluating the high‑school students who work in the Center. The Assistant often works without direct supervision and uses independent judgment.

Job Functions
  • Observe the needs of up to eight infants and toddlers and prepare daily, developmentally appropriate lessons.
  • Organize materials, books, art supplies, and toys for daily use according to each child’s individual needs.
  • Set semester goals for all children under care.
  • Change diapers, feed, prepare bottles, toilet‑train, and meet developmental needs of children while in the program.
  • Supervise infants and toddlers indoors and outdoors, preparing activities that aid each child’s development.
  • Play with children, involving floor work, lifting children, and quick movements as required.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Center’s organization, curriculum, environment, and policies.
  • Work with the Child Care Center Director to order and purchase materials, supplies, and equipment as needed.
  • Guide program participants, including children, volunteers, student interns, and parents.
  • Assess physical, mental, and emotional development of infants, toddlers, and teen parents in collaboration with agencies and the Director.
  • Meet regularly with each child’s parent to review assessments and set goals.
  • Maintain accurate data collection, record‑keeping, and planning as required by ODE.
  • Fulfill performance standards and assist with compliance for all Oregon Administrative Rules pertaining to Center certification.
  • Maintain daily attendance records for each child, including diapering, feeding, and napping.
  • Operate copy machines, audio‑visual equipment, computers, and other electronic devices for center operation.
  • Keep the Center clean, including vacuuming, window cleaning, surface sanitizing, washing clothes and dishes, and floor cleaning.
  • Participate in school and Center staff meetings.
  • Adhere to all program and district policies and procedures.
  • Fulfill the working conditions and physical effort listed in the position description.
Working Conditions

Work with infants/toddlers and their teen parents in a state‑certified child‑care center. Supervision duties require standing for 30 minutes or more, rapid intervention for child safety, and repetitive movements such as sitting, stooping, crawling, lifting, walking, pushing, pulling, speaking, and hearing in a noisy environment. Tasks include undesirable cleaning, handling chemicals, exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, and occasional emotional confrontations. The employee frequently lifts children, materials, boxes, or equipment up to 30–50 pounds, feeds infants/toddlers, and changes diapers.
