Position: 7 Hour Educational Assistant - Inclusion - Bend Senior High School - Regular

Overview

Bend-La Pine Schools, Bend, Oregon 97703, is seeking an Educational Assistant – Inclusion. Under direct supervision, the Educational Assistant provides supported education services in classrooms, resource centers, or other school-related areas and supports the instructional program for assigned students with identified special needs.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with implementing individualized education plans (IEPs).
  • Assist special education teaching staff with preparation, implementation, and evaluation of individualized and group instructional programs.
  • Assist in communicating with teachers and parents on students’ progress.
  • Assist with record keeping to monitor students’ daily and monthly progress data.
  • Support students in understanding instructional concepts by reinforcing basic elements of teacher-directed activities.
  • Provide students with additional practice on identified skill areas.
  • Assist with the correction of student work as assigned by the classroom teacher.
  • Prepare instructional materials and operate instructional equipment.
  • Supervise students during recess, lunch, and before/after school to maintain a calm, safe environment in various settings.
  • Monitor the daily routines of small groups or individual students with special needs.
  • Participate in vocational or recreational activities developed for related student programs.
  • Assist in maintaining practical life skills (e.g., dressing, toileting, feeding) for students with disabilities in appropriate programs.
  • Follow the assigned daily schedule and fulfill other related duties as assigned.
  • Meet performance standards identified in the evaluation process as required by the position.
Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily indoors in classrooms or specialized instructional settings, with occasional outdoor supervision. The position requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and assisting students with mobility or personal care needs. The role may involve lifting or assisting students or equipment as needed.

The employee may be exposed to escalated student behaviors and may encounter bodily fluids while providing direct support. Work follows the assigned school schedule and may include participation in school activities.

The role requires attentiveness, patience, consistent implementation of intervention strategies, and collaboration with licensed staff to support student learning and safety. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Skills and Abilities
  • Teaching methods and procedures.
  • Filing and record keeping systems.
  • Computers, audio-visual equipment, and office machines, and their operation.
  • Instructional materials and their uses.
  • Basic provisions of PL-142, due process procedures, and IEPs for students identified as disabled.
  • Student behavior management and methods to assure proper conduct.
  • Safety practices.
Skills and Abilities
  • Possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Read, understand, and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Operate the telephones, computers, and other equipment required by the position.
  • Accurately transfer, record, and convey information and materials as required by the position.
  • Train and supervise student helpers.
  • Communicate clearly in speech and writing in accordance with educational standards.
  • Support the success of special education programs and the students served by these programs.
  • Maintain a patient, positive, persistent attitude and a warm, accepting approach toward persons with disabilities.
  • Learn to manage bodily fluid spills appropriately.
  • Adhere to district requirements for a drug-free workplace and confidentiality requirements.
Education and Experience

Two years of related college education, an AA degree, or meet the Highly Qualified requirements by passing the Paraprofessional Assessment Exam with a score of 455 or higher. Knowledge of district practices or policies is desirable. Job proficiency can be acquired in 12 to 24 months.
