Position: Part Time Instructor Automotive (POOL)

Position Type:
Part‑time Instructor

Primary Purpose

To provide instruction in automotive technology as part of an instructional team for the Master Automotive Technician Certificate, AAS in Automotive Management, and related certificate programs. The instructor will teach automotive technology, direct student discussion, select laboratory learning experiences, evaluate student performance, and manage self‑paced components of the curriculum.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Effectively teach portions of automotive technology covering eight ASE content areas.
  • Provide individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress.
  • Manage self‑paced components of the program as part of the teaching load.
  • Instruct courses during day or evening sessions and on any of the four campuses served by COCC, including remote or online delivery via interactive video chat.
  • Maintain a quality classroom learning environment and work effectively with individual students.
  • Use teaching and assessment methods that incorporate current educational standards.
  • Record and evaluate student progress, providing feedback and cooperating with College personnel for career planning, job placement, and further studies.
  • Assist in revising and standardizing curricula for automotive courses in collaboration with the Business Department.
  • Attend regular trainings as scheduled by the department or College.
  • Perform other essential duties specific to each location, as assigned.
  • Collaborate with College personnel to write proposals for program funds.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of the automotive field based on education and/or experience.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in automotive certificate course and shop equipment instruction.
  • Understanding of teaching various audiences and group dynamics.
  • Visual ability, corrected if necessary, to observe, direct, and supervise students.
  • Ability to operate or oversee computer-based and video chat technology (e.g., Zoom) and to learn the LMS used at COCC.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to review, understand, and apply concepts from training programs, conferences, and professional literature.
  • Flexibility to work with other faculty and COCC staff at all levels.
  • Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations as required.
  • Commitment to contributing to a diverse workplace.
Ergonomic Requirements

Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, whiteboards, projectors, and shop equipment. Standing is required 50% of the time. Occasional exposure to fumes, vapors, grease, oil, and dirt, with the need to handle heavy equipment. All individuals must be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology.
  • Five (5) years of current journeyman‑level experience in automotive technology.
  • ASE certification in the areas taught prior to hire date (proof required).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate of Science in Industrial/Technical Education.
  • Teaching experience.
